JJM's 1907 Yellowstone diary: four pages of the original pencil manuscript
James J. Murphy's diary of the 1907 Yellowstone trip (original pencil manuscript, "Crown Memorandum" pocket notebook) · private family papers · 1907-07-25
Summary
The only images in the archive of **James J. Murphy's own handwritten diary** of the July-August 1907 wagon trip to Yellowstone. The full text is known from the 1994 booklet (1907-07-25_sagebrushers-diary_jjm-yellowstone-trip). Dan Murphy scanned four pages in March 2018: 1. The **cover**: a small green "Crown Memorandum" pocket notebook. 2. The **inside front cover and first page**. Agnes (Kelly) Murphy's ink note reads "Dad's first trip to Yellowstone Park ... the year before we were married ... you could really make a good story of this ... I always meant to go over this with a pen". JJM's pencil party list follows: "July 25 - 1907 / Yellowstone National Park Trip. / Party composed.", the twelve names, and "Cook & Husband / Mrs. & Mr. Charles Emerson", with "Chaperons." added in ink. 3. The **last page** (23 Aug): "... called at My Hons house the first time in 30 days. Gee how glad I was to be back again and have her near me." Below it, Agnes Murphy's ink note: "It's great reading especially when I remember I was 'His Hon'! Mother." On the inside back cover, a pasted slip from "H" (Agnes Murphy Ward-Llewellyn) to her sister Imelda Bryant asks that the diary be saved for Imelda's son John. 4. A **spread from 9 Aug** (Grand Canyon, Artist Point, Shaw's camp, "on one platform I carved our monogram"), with "Our monogram J.J.M. - A.R.K." drawn at the top in ink. Comparing these pages with the booklet shows that the 1994 text was lightly edited. It also shows that "{Jim's best friend}" after Tish Maloney's name, and the heading "Party pairs", come from the 1994 booklet, not from the diary.

Open questions
- Only four pages are scanned, at 100 dpi. A full scan of the notebook at 300-600 dpi would allow a reading of the whole diary in JJM's hand. It would correct the 1994 booklet's apparent misreadings of place names and settle its edits.
- Where is the notebook now? It was in Dan Murphy's hands in March 2018, sent to him by John Bryant.
