Agnes Kelly Murphy

Also known as: Agnes Bridget Kelly, Agnes R. Murphy, Mrs. James J. Murphy, Mrs. J. J. Murphy

family confidence: 95 — certain (corroborated)Kelly (paternal in-law)

Daughter of John Kelly of Walkerville. Married the user's JJM (James Joseph Murphy, then a Hennessy Mercantile boys'- department clerk; later founder of Murphy-Softley; later moved to LA about 1925; d. LA 1938) at St. Lawrence church on 19 October 1908. The provisional identification with the 1927-widow Mrs. Agnes Murphy (B's widow) is REJECTED per the 2026-05-27 GEDCOM evidence: the 1927 widow is a DIFFERENT Agnes Murphy, married to the unrelated person_james_j_murphy_butte_died_1927. **Records merged 2026-10-03**: this record, her family-tree (GEDCOM) record, and the two "Mrs. James J. Murphy" records made before her first name was known. She is the Mrs. James J. Murphy of 4339 Victoria Ave, Los Angeles (1936-1940 clippings; "Agnes R." in the LA city directories) and the daughter named in the 1940 Mary Chatham Kelly obituary. Born Agnes Bridget Kelly, 29 June 1887, Walkerville, daughter of John Kelly and Mary Chatham (1887 baptismal certificate; family tree); died 12 January 1967, Anaheim, California (family tree). Children named in the 1940 Llewellyn-Murphy wedding write-up: Agnes Terese, Imelda, Joan Claire, "Dahl" and James Jr.

Facts

Each fact shows how sure the archive is of it (0–100) and the sources it rests on.

Birth:
1887-06-29, Walkerville, Montana 951907-07-25 — The Sagebrushers — Jim Murphy's Travelogue through Yellowstone National Park, Told in His Own Words; 2026-05-27 — Luke Murphy family tree (Ancestry.com)The baptismal certificate of St. Patrick's Church, Butte (issued 6 Dec 1946, reproduced in the Sagebrushers booklet front matter) gives born 29 June 1887, baptised 2 July 1887. The family tree gives the same date at Walkerville, citing the SSDI, the California Death Index and the 1920 and 1940 censuses. The date is 95; the place is less sure (75): the certificate says 'born in Butte, Montana', the tree says Walkerville. The 1967 family chart also has 'Walkerville, Montana'.
Death:
1967-01-12, Anaheim, California 752026-05-27 — Luke Murphy family tree (Ancestry.com); 1967 — Murphy family papers; 1995-02-20 — Murphy family papersThe family tree: died 12 Jan 1967, Anaheim, Orange County, citing the SSDI, the California Death Index (1967-01-12), Find a Grave and two Montana Standard obituaries (13 and 14 Jan 1967). None of these is filed in the archive. The year 1967 is also on the 1967 family chart ('Agnes R. Murphy (1887-1967)') and on Joan Murphy's 1979 typed tree, to which the date of her death was added in pen (1995 letter); the year is 95, the day 75.

His diary and her own note in it. That 'Hon' is Agnes rests on her note ('I was His Hon!') and the A.R.K. monogram.

Inference from the letter (31 Mar 1925). James has no Los Angeles directory entry in 1925 and first appears in 1926 (Bullock's, 433 W 60th), so she and the children may have gone ahead of him. The undated January letter's 'the family was united once more' at Christmas (probably Jan 1926, see issues) fits this; analyst's reading, 60 for the sequence.
