The Sagebrushers — James J. Murphy's 1907 Yellowstone trip

2 sources.

The month-long horse-drawn wagon trip from Butte to Yellowstone National Park and back (25 July – 23 August 1907) that JJM made at 23 with eleven friends and a cook couple, told in his own diary: Tish Maloney (his best friend in family tradition), Maud Sheehan, Grace Dawson, Kate and Nell Cosgrove, George Archibald, May Konen, William Thoroway and his wife, Owen Brinton, Ann Laughrin, and Charlie Emerson and his wife as cooks. Independent campers were "sagebrushers" to the hotel coach drivers, as against the hotel "dudes". Also the diary's later life: the typescript by his daughter Imelda Bryant; Dan Murphy's 1994 Murphy Press edition, *The Sagebrushers*; the original manuscript's passage to the publisher Douglas Westfall (1993) and his book project *A Century in Yellowstone, From the Journal of James J. Murphy in 1907*; and Brett French's Billings Gazette story of 3 February 2023. Research thread: research/docs/sagebrushers-thread-2026-09-28.md.
