Patrick "Tish" Maloughney (1883–1958; "Tish Maloney" in print; JJM's best friend by family tradition; Chatham cousin of Aggie Kelly)
Also known as: Tish Maloney, Tish Maloughney, Patrick Maloughney, Pat Maloney, P. T. "Tish" Maloney, P. Tish Maloney, Patrick Tish Maloney, Tish P. Maloney
family confidence: 95 — certain (corroborated)Chatham (Kelly maternal grandparent line)
JJM's "best friend" per family tradition: the 1994 Sagebrushers booklet adds "{Jim's best friend}" to his name in the party list. That is Dan Murphy's editorial note; JJM's original pencil list reads only "Tish Maloney." (corrected 2026-09-28 from the manuscript scans). The diary shows Tish as JJM's constant companion on the trip, paired with Grace Dawson. Formal name confirmed by his 1909 Silver Bow marriage license (B 2146) as Patrick Maloughney; newspapers and the diary anglicize it to Maloney. Born 1 Sep 1883 at Hurontown, Houghton County, Michigan, son of Thomas Maloughney (b. c.1852 Canada; d. Montana 2 May 1889) and Catherine "Kate" Chatham (d. Walkerville 20 Apr 1916), both buried at St Patrick's Cemetery, Butte. Tish's mother and Mary Chatham Kelly (Aggie Kelly Murphy's mother) were sisters, so Tish and Aggie were first cousins: he was family-by-Chatham before the 1908 Murphy-Kelly wedding. Married Margaret L. Scully, a fellow Hennessy clerk, 3 Nov 1909 at St. Mary's, Butte; five children, all born in Butte 1910-19 (Mary Dorothy "Dode", Margaret Irene "Peg", William Clare, Julia Elizabeth "Jule", Helen Louise; all deceased). Career: with the Hennessy company from about 1896 for "21 years" (clothing department by 1909); bought John J. Crowley's tailoring shop at 221 N. Main on 15 Sep 1917. Democratic candidate for county clerk and recorder (1914) and county commissioner (1918, 1920); elected alderman for the Second Ward on 2 Apr 1917. Butte addresses 501 W. Daly, Walkerville (1907) and 511 W. Quartz (1914-19). In Long Beach, California, from 1926 (timekeeper; Richfield Oil Co. in 1932); died there 15 Jan 1958, aged 74, of 1026 Hoffman Ave; buried All Souls Cemetery, Long Beach. Not Mayor W. H. "Billy" Maloney (1917-19). Research: research/docs/sagebrushers-companions-2026-09-28/tish-maloney.md

Day and month from the family tree, which cites his 1942 WWII draft card (and the 1920-1940 censuses). Find a Grave 163071151 (research note, tish-maloney.md section 4) gives 1 Sep 1882, which fails the death-notice test. Place: the licence reads "born at Hurontown in the County of Houghton and State of Michigan" (re-read from the register image on 4 Oct 2026: clear) and the tree agrees. Year and place 95, day 75: 85 overall, the record's number.

One explicit primary statement; 95. · 1909-11-03 — Silver Bow County Marriage Register; 1906 — Butte City Directory 1906 (R. L.
