Myles Lyne (c. 1791–1872; Ardgroom farmer; second husband of Margaret Shea; Ellen Lyne Murphy's stepfather, named as her father in 1881)

Also known as: Myles (Mark) Lyne

family confidence: 95 — certain (corroborated)Lyne (paternal in-law via Ellen Lyne Murphy)

Second husband of Margaret Shea and stepfather of Ellen (Lyne) Murphy, so James's step-grandfather. - **1865**: Myles Lyne, "full age", widower, farmer, son of Jeremiah Lyne (deceased), married Margaret Shea alias Sullivan, widow, on 9 June 1865 at the chapel of Eyeries (civil marriage return). - **1872**: Myles Lyne died at Ardgroom on 10 May 1872, married, a farmer, aged 81, of old age; informant Ellen Lyne, "present at death" (civil death return No. 400). - **1881**: named as father of the bride, "Myles Lyne, Farmer", on the marriage return of Ellen Lyne and Patrick Murphy. **One man: user decision 2026-10-03 ("yes same myles").** The archive had held the man who died in 1872 as a separate "Myles Lyne Sr.", father of a "Myles Jr." who married in 1865. Why they are taken as one: - Terese Murphy (20 Sept 1971) says her grandmother's second husband was "a man in his sixties, a prosperous land-owner and widower, who had divided his farm among his sons", and "I believe he died in his seventies before my mother's teens". In 1967 she wrote that he "died before our Mother was a young adult". A death in 1872, when Ellen was a child of about 8 to 13, fits. - The 1872 return has him married, a farmer, at Ardgroom. - The 1865 return names the groom's father as Jeremiah Lyne, so nothing supports a Myles father and a Myles son. - The family tree has one Myles (Mark) Lyne, born about 1791, died 10 May 1872, husband of Margaret Shea, with Ellen as his stepchild. Against: the death return's age of 81 is about ten years more than Terese's "sixties" in 1865; and the 1881 marriage return does not mark him "(dead)", though another entry on the same page marks a dead father. Claude's own estimate that the two records are one man: about 75. **Stepfather, not father, of Ellen: decision 2026-10-03** (confidence 95 that she was born before he married her mother; sources and reasons on Ellen's record). The 1839 Tralee land-registry freeholder Myles Lyne had earlier been folded into the 1872 record as probably the same man; that link stays at 25 on the property record.

The row has not been read; same name in Kerry, age would fit (about 48).

1881-02-13description · Named as the bride's father, 'Myles Lyne, Farmer', on Ellen's marriage return (13 Feb 1881), not marked dead though another entry on the page marks a dead father; the parish register entry (reported) also names 'Myles Lyne' (Ardgroom (village + RC Chapel))

Two records of the marriage; the omission of 'dead' is a small point against the 1872 merge.
