Catherine Murphy Sullivan (b. ~1864; sister of Patrick Murphy; m. Patrick "Tailor" Sullivan 1884; JJM's godmother 1883)

Also known as: Catherine Murphy, Kate Murphy, Mrs. Patrick Sullivan

family confidence: 95 — certain (corroborated)Murphy (paternal)

Patrick Murphy's sister, JJM's paternal aunt. Married Patrick "Tailor" Sullivan of Slieve on 23 Feb 1884 at Eyeries (bride of Fawnkil, father James Murphy); mother of Honora (Nora) Sullivan, b. 1888, and of seven other children per the family tree. Named as godmother (sponsor) on JJM's 29 July 1883 baptismal cert at Eyeries; she would have been about 19. The register gives only the name "Catherine Murphy", so that identification is held at 75 on the baptism record. **Records merged 2026-10-03**: this record (made for the 1883 godmother, then used for the 1884 bride and the 1888 mother) and the family-tree record of the same woman (GEDCOM @I322233503433@: b. about 1864, Co. Cork; death place Ardgroom village, no date). The earlier provisional link to person_catherine_murphy_aughabrack (the tenant of the 1881 Reynolds case, mother of an adult son in 1881) is not carried over; that record stays separate.

The Annals list Kate fifth of Seamus Mor's six children, before Michael, whose baptism of 28 May 1864 is filed, so she was very probably born by 1863; she married in Feb 1884 and bore her last child in May 1900, which puts her birth about 1855-1863. 25 is for the year; the county (the family was at Ballycrovane/Fawnkil) is 95.

  • godparent of James Joseph "James J." Murphy (b. 1883 Ardgroom; d. 1938 LA)85
The 1883 entry (the 1971 certificate and Joe Murphy's irishgenealogy.ie index printout, KY-RC-BA-232395, Eyeries book E 4, p. 87, no. 5) names the sponsor 'Catherine Murphy' with no address. For Patrick's sister: she was unmarried until Feb 1884 and of an age to stand (born about 1855-63); seven months later she married Patrick Sullivan of Slieve, the townland where James was born; a sister of the father is the usual godmother for a first child, and Patrick was already in America (Terese Murphy: 'His father had left for America some months before he was born', 20 Sept 1971; 'He came to Butte ... before Jim was born', 9 Apr 1967; loose letters in archive/documents/letters, not filed as source folders). Against: Catherine Murphy is a common name in Eyeries parish and the entry gives nothing more.
