Read 2026-09-26 by an Opus agent from Norelene O'Dwyer's photographs of 18 Aug 2026 (source-1.jpg = left-hand page, source-2.jpg = facing right-hand page). The agent recorded every heading, name, date and place in the printed spelling and paraphrased the running text (copyright). The verbatim text of sections (A)-(C) is in the repository's other copy, _annals-of-beara-vol-ii-p270-section-a-patrick-murphy-ballycrovane/transcription_claude.md, verified word for word against these photographs.
# Norelene O'Dwyer's three photographs, 18 Aug 2026 (Annals of Beara Murphy pages and the 1918 drowning article)
Read 2026-09-26 from the three JPEG attachments in `_inbox/beara-attachments-2026-09-26/`. Each file is 3264 x 2448 px, taken on an iPad on 18 Aug 2026 (EXIF: IMG_1016 at 13:01:07, IMG_1021 at 14:57:23, IMG_1022 at 14:57:50; EXIF orientation tag 3). The raw pixels were rotated into reading position with PIL and cropped into column segments. Each segment was read at full resolution in colour and in greyscale with autocontrast, and doubtful words were re-checked in 2x to 8x crops.
Conventions:
- **No verbatim running text.** The book (Riobárd Ó Dwyer, *Who Were My Ancestors? Annals of Beara*, vol. II) and the magazine article in image 3 are both copyrighted, so this file does not reproduce their prose. Instead it records:
- every printed heading;
- every child number, name, date, place and relationship, entry by entry, in the **printed spelling**;
- any other prose, paraphrased.
The photographs themselves are the verbatim source. The wording of sections (A), (B) and (C) was also compared word by word with the repository screenshot transcription in `annals-verification.md`; the few differences are listed under each image.
- `[?]` marks an uncertain reading. `[clipped]` marks text cut off by the photo edge, the gutter or the page curve.
- Names and places keep the printed spelling. The book prints no fadas, e.g. "Mor". An asterisk before a child's name is the book's own mark.
- Pen marks on the pages (underlining in red or pink, dark lines, handwritten words) are reported separately as ANNOTATION. The images do not show who made them.
- Anything not printed on the image is labelled **inference**.
Status: written image by image, in the order the images were finished.

### (a) What it is
A photograph of an open printed book with the text set in two columns per page. The text runs sideways in the raw file and reads upright after a 90° anticlockwise turn. Red or pink pen underlining appears throughout. Three blocks of text are in frame:
1. **Main block, fully legible:** one complete column. The gutter is immediately to its right, so it is the right-hand column of a **left-hand page** (inference from where the gutter falls). The top edge of the photo cuts through the first line, of which only a final word survives. The foot of the column is in frame: blank paper lies below its last line, level with the last lines of the other two blocks.
2. **Left strip:** the right-hand ends of the lines in the same page's left column, cut off by the left edge of the photo.
3. **Right strip, beyond the gutter:** the left-hand beginnings (about the first fifth) of the lines in the facing right-hand page's left column, cut off by the right edge of the photo.
**Running header and page number: not visible on either page.** A left-hand page's header ("NNN Annals of Beara Volume II") would sit above the top edge of the photo. A right-hand page's header would sit at the top right of the facing page, outside the frame. Image 2 shows that roughly the top 14 to 15 lines of both pages are also outside this frame (inference from line counts; see Image 2). No folio appears at the foot of any column. The photo does not show the book title; identifying the book rests on the brief and on the layout.
Family entries in the main column, in printed order:
1. The tail of the preceding family: child (9) Josephine. That family's heading and surname are not in the photo.
2. **MURPHY (BALLYCROVANE)**: introductory paragraph.
3. **(A) PATRICK MURPHY**: complete.
4. **(B) SEAMUS MOR MURPHY & PEIG UONHI (BALLYCROVANE)**: heading complete. The text runs to the foot of the column and stops mid-sentence during John's son Jim's marriage, at the name Donaileen. Children (4) to (6) continue on the facing page (Image 2).
Section check requested in the brief:
- **"(A) PATRICK MURPHY": present and complete.**
- **"(B) SEAMUS MOR MURPHY & PEIG UONHI (BALLYCROVANE)": present**, heading complete ("(B) SEAMUS MOR MURPHY &" / "PEIG UONHI" / "(BALLYCROVANE)"). Children (1) to (3) are here; the section is finished on the facing page.
- **"(C) JIM MURPHY & JULIA O'SULLIVAN (SEER)": heading not visible.** The facing-page strip shows only the first few letters of the (C) children list; image 2 confirms this line for line. The (C) heading lies above the top edge of this photo.
- **Page number: none visible.**
**This printing is a different setting of the text from the repository screenshot** (`annals-verification.md`, Image 1). The evidence:
- **Line breaks.** The screenshot has one full-width line running from "Coastguard Station" to "Eyeries", with the date on the next line. Here the same passage falls across three narrow-column lines.
- **Asterisk.** This print marks the third child of (A) with an asterisk ("\*James"); the screenshot transcription has no asterisk.
- **Dash spacing in (B).** This print has a space after the dash before "(1)"; the screenshot has none.
- **Capitalisation.** In (C), John's entry has lower-case "was" here (visible on the facing-page strip and in Image 2); the screenshot has "Was".
**Inference:** the screenshot comes from another edition or a re-set or digital version, so a page number from one would not automatically apply to the other. This print also settles the screenshot's doubtful "G?rteen": it reads **Gurteen** clearly.
### (b) Printed content, in order (extraction; not verbatim)
**Main column**
- [first line clipped by the photo edge; only its final word survives]
- **Tail of the preceding family:** (9) Josephine (May 23rd 1930[?]) married Curly O'Neill, son of Willie O'Neill and Dora Lynch, Dreenagh; the couple live in Southall, Middlesex, England. (Reading note: the top halves of the date are cut off. "23rd" is secure from the lower halves and the "rd" ending; the last digit of the year could be 0 or 6.)
- **Heading:** MURPHY / (BALLYCROVANE)
- **Introductory paragraph (paraphrase):** the family first lived just across the road from the old Coastguard Station, beside the first Ballycrovane National School. After a new Coastguard Station was built further west in Gurteen, Eyeries, around 1900, they moved into the old station.
- **Heading:** (A) PATRICK MURPHY. "Three of his children" are listed: (1) Michael; (2) Peig; (3) \*James, known as Seamus Mor. Details under (c).
- **Heading:** (B) SEAMUS MOR MURPHY & / PEIG UONHI / (BALLYCROVANE). The opening line states 6 children; (1) Mary, (2) Paddy and (3) \*John follow, with John's own four children lettered (a) to (d). Details under (c). The column ends mid-sentence.
- **Print note:** the words for Paddy's wife, "Margaret Murphy Cuardonoghue", are set in visibly heavier type than the words around them. They are black like the rest of the print and do not look like a pen mark.
- **Word check against the screenshot transcription:** (A) and the part of (B) on this page are identical word for word, apart from the asterisk and dash-spacing points listed in (a).
**ANNOTATION** (pen, not print; positions approximate):
- Red or pink underlining under:
- the heading MURPHY and its "(BALLYCROVANE)";
- child (3) of (A), from the number through "Seamus Mor";
- the first heading line of (B);
- the passage from Jack O'Sullivan's by-name "Jack Dorohy" through his second marriage and Paddy's number, name and date;
- the opening of John's entry;
- the sentence stating that John and Mary had four children in Ballycrovane;
- "(d) Jim.".
- A thin dark line, not red, is struck through "Uonhi" and through "grand" of "grandfather" in the (A) phrase about Tim Uonhi's grandfather.
- On the facing-page strip: a faint red or pink underline under John's birth year line, and a dashed grey, pencil-like underline under the words for "his brother".
**Left strip** (the same page's left column; only the last one to three words of each line survive): two bold headings whose ends read "…CH" (probably LYNCH, inference); a bold ")" ending another heading at the top and two ")" heading-ends near the foot. The legible words include Daniel, Julia, Jack, Coomeen, Lake City, Butte, O'Sullivan, (Donal), Knockroe, Montana (twice, and "…ntana" twice more), "…aileen (an", "…nisfernard.", Mary, "…riscoll", Ellen (Feb., a date ending "8th 1890)" and a mid-sentence "Married". None can be attributed to a named family from this photo.
**Right strip** (the facing page's left column; only the first one to three words of each line survive):
- **Lines 1 to 19** are the openings of the (C) children list, identical to the left column of Image 2: an indented "Jim a[nd]", then lines beginning with the dates Dec. 24th, 1891, Feb. 1974, 1896, Mar., Apr. and 25th 1909, and with "(10) Willie", "Annie; (12" and "Beaufort".
- **After a blank line:** a bold heading beginning "(T", which Image 2 shows is "(THE STORE, BALLYCROVANE)", the second line of the McCarthy (The Store) heading.
- **Next, a paragraph opening "Donal".** Its line-starts include Ballycrova[ne] (twice), Paddy Shea…, Jeremiah and \*Jeremiah, Nora and McCarthy.
- **Then a bold sub-heading "(B) D…"** and a paragraph opening "Four o[f]". Its line-starts include "(born about", "son of Dar…", Ballycrova[ne], Johanna, "Lynch, Gol…", Murphy and Harrington.
### (c) Persons named
**Tail of the preceding family (surname not shown)**
- **Josephine**, child (9), b. May 23rd 1930[?]. Married **Curly O'Neill**; they live in Southall, Middlesex, England.
- **Curly O'Neill**: son of **Willie O'Neill** and **Dora Lynch**, Dreenagh.
**(A) PATRICK MURPHY** (family heading: Ballycrovane). No dates, wife or separate townland are given for Patrick himself. Three children are listed:
- (1) **Michael**. Married in Ballycrovane **Margaret McCarthy (Rohane)**. A son, **Michael**, is recorded in **Oct. 1843**. The book notes no further trace.
- (2) **Peig**. Married her next-door neighbour **Batt McCarthy (Rohane), Ballycrovane**. She was grandmother of **Annie (Batt) McCarthy of Faunkil**.
- (3) **\*James, known as Seamus Mor**. Married into the home farm of **Peig Uonhi (Harrington) of Bawers**. Peig was a 1st cousin of **Jack Uonhi**, grandfather of **Tim Uonhi**.
**(B) SEAMUS MOR MURPHY & PEIG UONHI (BALLYCROVANE)**: six children stated; (1) to (3) are on this page.
- (1) **Mary**, b. **Dec. 1846**.
- She was first wife of her 3rd cousin **Jack O'Sullivan**, known as **Jack Dorohy**, son of **Patrick O'Sullivan (Shearhig)** and **Mary O'Sullivan (Dorohy)**, **Deargrua**.
- Jack later married **Nora O'Sullivan**, sister of **Sean (a Choill) O'Sullivan, Caolrua**.
- (2) **Paddy**, b. **Apr. 1850**. Went to **Rosmacowen** and married **Margaret Murphy**. The print sets her name without a comma before **Cuardonoghue (near Harbour View), Castletownbere**.
- (3) **\*John**. The first of the sons to settle on the farm.
- He married **Mary (Danieleen) O'Sullivan**, aunt of **Den Batt O'Sullivan**, daughter of **Danieleen O'Sullivan (Croumhane)** and **Johanna Harrington**, **Gorth, Urhan**.
- Four children, in **Ballycrovane**:
- (a) **Mary**, **Nov. 7th 1882**
- (b) **Catherine**, **June 29th 1884**
- (c) **Brigid**, **Jan. 12th 1887**
- (d) **Jim**, no date given
- John died (no date given). His widow and young Jim moved to **Eyeries Village**, where Jim later married **Mary O'Sullivan, daughter of Donaileen (an** [clipped; completed on Image 2].
- Children (4) to (6): on Image 2.
### (d) Confidence
- **HIGH** for the main column. The print is sharp, every word was read at full resolution, and the dates were checked in 2x to 3x zooms.
- **MEDIUM** for Josephine's date "May 23rd 1930[?]", whose upper halves are cut off.
- **HIGH** for the strip fragments as fragments. Assigning the facing-page strip to (C) is also **HIGH**, confirmed line for line by Image 2.

### (a) What it is
A photograph of the **right-hand page** of the same opening; the gutter and page edge are at the left of the frame. The page is in frame from its top margin down to the heading McCARTHY / (THE STORE, BALLYCROVANE). The bottom edge of the photo cuts through the lower half of that heading's second line, so the lower part of the page is not shown.
- **Left column:** full width, every word legible.
- **Right column:** only the first sixth of each line, cut off by the right edge of the photo.
- **Left edge:** a strip of shadowed gutter, with no text.
**Running header and page number: not visible.** The top margin is in frame: about five line-heights of blank paper above the first text line, across the whole visible width. It shows nothing. A right-hand header "Riobard O'Dwyer, N.T. NNN" that is right-aligned (inference) would lie beyond the right edge of the photo. No folio is visible.
**Same page as the right strip of Image 1**, so **images 1 and 2 are the two facing pages of one opening.** Three things show this:
- The line-openings in image 1's strip match this page's left column line for line.
- The same pen marks appear in both photos: a red underline on John's birth-year line and a dark underline on "his brother".
- The (B) sentence runs straight across the gutter. The left-hand page stops at the name Donaileen, and this page opens with the rest of his by-name, "Oileain)".
The left-hand page (Image 1) carries MURPHY (BALLYCROVANE), (A) and (B) children (1) to (3). This right-hand page carries the end of (B) and all of (C).
Family entries on this page (left column), in printed order:
1. **End of (B):** the rest of Jim's marriage, then children (4) Jim, (5) Kate and (6) Michael. There is no heading, because the section continues from the left-hand page.
2. **(C) JIM MURPHY & JULIA O'SULLIVAN (SEER) (BALLYCROVANE)**: the heading and all 13 children, complete.
3. **McCARTHY (THE STORE, BALLYCROVANE)**: the heading of the next family; its second line is half cut off.
Section check requested in the brief:
- **"(A) PATRICK MURPHY": not on this page.** It is on the left-hand page (Image 1).
- **"(B) SEAMUS MOR MURPHY & PEIG UONHI (BALLYCROVANE)": heading not on this page.** Its last 11 lines are here, ending with child (6) Michael.
- **"(C) JIM MURPHY & JULIA O'SULLIVAN (SEER)": present and complete.** The three-line heading reads "(C) JIM MURPHY &" / "JULIA O'SULLIVAN (SEER)" / "(BALLYCROVANE)", followed by children (1) to (13).
- **Page number: none visible.**
**Comparison with the repository screenshot.** The comparison was word by word against `annals-verification.md`, after normalising apostrophes and dash spacing:
- **(B):** identical, all 240 words.
- **(C):** identical except that John's entry has lower-case **"was"** here and "Was" in the screenshot.
- **Child (13):** this page gives child (13), which the screenshot cuts off: **Julia (Sept. 25th 1909)**, who married **John McAllen** in Limerick; the couple later lived in **Westcove, Co. Kerry**.
### (b) Printed content, in order (extraction; not verbatim)
**Left column**
- **End of (B), continued from Image 1:** Jim's wife Mary O'Sullivan was daughter of Donaileen (an Oileain) O'Sullivan and Nora Murphy, Inisfernard. Jim and Mary's children named are Dannie Murphy (postman) and Jimmy Murphy, followed by "etc". Then (4) \*Jim, (5) Kate and (6) Michael (May 1864). Details under (c).
- **Heading:** (C) JIM MURPHY & / JULIA O'SULLIVAN (SEER) / (BALLYCROVANE)
- **(C) text:** opens by stating 13 children, then numbers (1) to (13) in sequence, each with a date except (11) Annie. Details under (c).
- **Heading:** McCARTHY / (THE STORE, BALLYCROVANE) [lower half of the second line cut by the bottom edge; the text is secure from the upper halves]
**ANNOTATION** (pen, not print; positions approximate):
- Red or pink underlining under:
- the (B) words introducing child (4) \*Jim;
- "JIM MURPHY &" in the (C) heading;
- John's number, name and birth date in (C), continuing along the next line to the place of drowning.
- Dark grey or black wavy underlining, a different pen or pencil from the red, under Patie's entry (his number, name, birth date and the words saying he drowned with John) and under the following line up to the date of drowning. Some of the strokes run between the lines.
- A small dark pen stroke crosses the closing bracket after Jim's birth year "1893", with a dot beside it.
**Right column** (only the first one to three words of each line survive):
- **The top three line-heights are blank** in the strip. A centred heading may lie out of frame to the right.
- **A paragraph opening "Jacki[e]".** Its line-starts include the dates "(Aug. 18[7?]" and "(Apr. 17t[h]", a capitalised "Settled", "(Uonhi)", "daughter", "Pats (Ma…", "in Boston", "Connie O'…", "and Mary", "1883)", "man from", "1886), Da…" and "all went t[o]".
- **A bold heading beginning "CA…"**, then a second heading line of which only one stroke survives.
- **A paragraph opening "Jame[s]".** Its line-starts include "Mary (Fe[b.]", "back in la…", "Cork Cit[y]", "Philomen[a]", "Staff at", "1914) a m…", "Jerry (Ju…", "Kathleen", "Nora Ha…", "\*Michael", "place and", "(Paddy)", "Uxside, A…", "(Dec. 30th", "Canada; (" and "(formerly" (at the bottom edge).
### (c) Persons named
**End of (B) SEAMUS MOR MURPHY & PEIG UONHI (Ballycrovane)**
- **Mary O'Sullivan**, wife of Jim (son of (3) \*John and Mary). She was daughter of **Donaileen (an Oileain) O'Sullivan** and **Nora Murphy**, **Inisfernard**. The words "Donaileen (an" are on Image 1.
- Jim and Mary's children named: **Dannie Murphy (postman)** and **Jimmy Murphy**, followed by "etc".
- (4) **\*Jim**, no date given. Settled and married on the home farm after his brother John's death. His wife was **Julia O'Sullivan (Seer)**, an aunt of **Dan O'Sullivan (Seer)** and daughter of **Daniel (Seer) O'Sullivan** and **Mary Goggin**, **Scrahan, Urhan**.
- (5) **Kate**, no date given. Married **Paddy (tailor) O'Sullivan, Ardgroom Village**, son of **Sean (Philib) O'Sullivan** and **Nora Rahilly**, **North Reenavaude, Ardgroom**.
- (6) **Michael**, **May 1864**. Went to **San Francisco**.
