Summary

Roman Catholic Birth and Baptismal Certificate issued 27 October 1971 by P.P. Thomas McMahon of Eyeries, transcribing the original baptismal register entry of 29 July 1883. Subject: James Murphy, born 26 July 1883 in the **townland of Sleave** (not Ardgroom proper as the GEDCOM had it — Sleave is a more specific sub-locality within the Eyeries parish), baptized 29 July 1883 in the Church of Eyeries by the Rev. J. O'Connell. Parents: **Patrick Murphy** and **Ellen Lyne** — first primary- source confirmation that Ellen's maiden name was Lyne. This opens a new in-law branch (Lyne) on the paternal Murphy line. Sponsors (godparents): **Michael Murphy** and **Catherine Murphy** — per Irish Catholic baptismal custom, godparents are usually paternal/maternal aunts and uncles. Patrick Murphy's only GEDCOM-attested adult sister of plausible age in 1883 is Catherine Murphy (b. ~1864 Co. Cork; she would have been ~19 in 1883). Michael Murphy is not in the GEDCOM as a Patrick sibling; he is likely either an uncle or cousin in the Murphy paternal line — provisionally treated as a new person.

# Transcription — JJM Birth and Baptismal Certificate, 1883 **Source**: Roman Catholic Birth and Baptismal Certificate issued 27 October 1971 by P.P. Thomas McMahon of Eyeries, Co. Cork, transcribing the original baptismal register entry of 29 July 1883. **Form**: Veritas Co., Ltd., Dublin (printed certificate form). **Status**: Complete. Handwritten entries on a pre-printed form. --- ## Form fields (verbatim) > **Birth and Baptismal Certificate** > > Diocese of **Kerry**     Parish of **Eyeries** > > On examination of the Register of Baptisms of above Parish I certify that according to it > > **James Murphy** was born on **26th** day of **July 1883**, and was baptized according to the Rites of the Catholic Church on **29th** day of **July 1883** in the Church of **Eyeries** by the Rev. **J. O'Connell**. > > Parents: >     **Patrick Murphy** >     **Ellen Lyne** > > Sponsors: >     **Michael Murphy** >     **Catherine Murphy** > > Confirmed: _________ > Married: _________ > > Signed: **Thomas McMahon**     **P.P.** > > Given this **27th** day of **October 1971** at **Eyeries**. > > *(Born in the townland of Sleave.)* --- ## Notes on the transcription - The baptising priest's initial reads **"J."** (J. O'Connell); could be "I." in older Latin convention but the form is English-style and "J." is the most natural reading. - The townland name **"Sleave"** is the small-print parenthetical at the bottom — clearly handwritten and legible. Not previously catalogued; the GEDCOM had birthplace as the higher-level "Ardgroom" but the actual townland is Sleave. - The certificate was retrieved on **27 October 1971** — a characteristic genealogy-research date, suggesting the user's family commissioned the lookup from the parish in 1971 (likely in connection with the broader family-tree work that culminated in the 1992 "Tracing Murphys" letter and the Ancestry tree later imported).

Open questions

  • The townland "Sleave" is not in vocab/places.yaml. Consider adding place_sleave_cork as a sub-place of place_castletownbere_cork (Eyeries parish). Verify spelling against an OSI / GenUKI townland index for Eyeries parish.
  • Michael Murphy (godfather) — not in current GEDCOM. Worth following up — could indicate an undocumented Patrick sibling, an uncle (one of James Murphy b. 1816's brothers), or a Murphy cousin from the wider Ardgroom Murphy clan.
  • Catherine Murphy (godmother) — collapse with person_catherine_murphy_aughabrack? Both are Catherine Murphy of Cork b. ~1864 region. The Aughabrack record was originally created for the 1881 Reynolds case; the GEDCOM matcher then linked it to Catherine Murphy (Patrick's sister). The Reynolds- case Catherine and Patrick's-sister Catherine may be two different individuals that got conflated — needs a back-pass.
