Summary

Election-result spread celebrating the **Democratic victory in Butte's 1917 city election**: "BIG MAJORITIES ROLLED UP BY THE DEMOCRATS." Carries portraits of the seven successful Democratic aldermen (First to Seventh wards) and the "MAYOR-ELECT" (W. H. Maloney). Includes **P. Tish Maloney** (as captioned; the returns print "Tish" Maloney, 751 votes), the Second-Ward Democratic aldermanic candidate, among the successful winners. Closes the four-clipping Tish 1917 alderman campaign sequence: Mar 18 self-ad → Mar 25 endorsement editorial → Mar 29 ticket ad → Apr 3 victory. Tish is now an **elected Butte alderman as of Apr 1917** — extending his documented civic role beyond his Hennessy clerk status. Pairs with the 1906 Butte directory (then Hennessy clerk in his early 20s) and the 1909 marriage to Margaret Scully to form a coherent Tish-arc: clerk → husband-and-citizen → alderman.

Narrative

Butte's Democratic ticket swept the city election of April 2, 1917, with W. H. Maloney elected mayor over Lewis A. Smith and Socialist Lewis J. Duncan, 5,140 to 3,132 to 1,612, and Neal A. Ward and P. J. Whitty taking city treasurer and police magistrate. Democrats carried seven of the eight wards for alderman — Peter Cavanaugh in the First, "Tish" Maloney in the Second, John Hanratty in the Third, Stephen Fletcher, George Hageman, Arthur V. Corry and Charles Swanson in the Fourth through Seventh — with only the Eighth going to Republican Dean W. Selfridge. About 10,000 votes were cast out of a registration of roughly 17,000, the polls closing at 6 o'clock and unofficial returns bulletined shortly after 8.

  • “As mayor of Butte I shall endeavor to carry into effect every plank of the platform upon which I was nominated and elected”
  • “Mr. Maloney looked tired after his strenuous double campaign, but he was delighted at the result”
  • “Quick returns featured the election.”

Maloney said last evening. Every appointive office in the city will be filled irrespective of any political tendencies and with only the idea of obtaining the highest possible degree of efficiency, Mr. Maloney promised. He expressed his thanks and appreciation of the big vote rolled up for him and said that at the end of his two years of office nobody would be able to say he had not done his best. Mr. Maloney looked tired after his strenuous double campaign, but he was delighted at the result and expressed his pleasure at the vote received by his colleagues on the democratic ticket. He will assume office the first Monday in May and has the power to appoint a city clerk, city engineer, city attorney, city physician, employes of the city health office and officials in control of street improvements and care. [The clipping also shows the heads of two further election items, "NEAL A. WARD WILL FOLLOW OLD POLICY" and "GILLIGAN THANKS DEMOCRATIC WORKERS"; their text runs below the edge of the clipping.]
