Summary

The Eyeries baptism register for 7 April 1850, the first entry of the month: "Pat. Murphy" in the margin, and in the entry "P.", lawful son of "Jacobi Murphy et Margaritae Uonhi de Ballycruane" (James Murphy and Margaret Uonhi of Ballycrovane). Sponsors: Daniel and Honora Uonhi. Uonhi is a branch name of the Harringtons. The baptism of the same couple's youngest child, Michael, on 28 May 1864 gives the mother as Margaret Harrington, and Riobard O Dwyer's Annals of Beara call the couple Seamus Mor Murphy and Peig Uonhi (Harrington) of Ballycrovane, with a second child "Paddy (Apr. 1850)". This is one of the two Eyeries baptisms that could be that of Patrick Murphy, husband of Ellen Lyne (d. Montana 1912). The other is the baptism at Gort on 4 April 1858. The case for each is set out on the site's analysis page, Patrick Murphy: born 1850 or 1858? Read from the register image on 26 Sept 2026 and again on 4 Oct 2026, when the second sponsor's name, cut off in the copy first held, was read on the NLI image as Honora.

# Baptism of Patrick Murphy, Ballycruane, 7 April 1850 *Eyeries baptism register, National Library of Ireland Microfilm 04286 / 05, image 37 ("Oct. 1849 to May 1850"), right-hand page. Read from the register image on 26 September and 4 October 2026. The register is in abbreviated Latin. Square brackets hold the editor's expansions and doubts.* The page is ruled in four columns: the child's name, the day of the month, the entry, and the sponsors. > **Incipit Mensis Aprilis 1850** > > | Name | Day | Entry | Sponsors | > |---|---|---|---| > | Pat. Murphy | 7 | Idem Bap. P. f. L. Jacobi Murphy et Margaritae Uonhi de Ballycruane | Daniel et Honora Uonhi | > | Ellena Murphy | 7 | Idem Bap. E. f. L. Jer[emiae] Murphy et Honorae Suonis[h] de Cahirkeem | Demetrius et Susanna[?] Murphy | In English, the first entry: "April 1850 begins. The 7th. The same [priest] baptised P[atrick], lawful son of James Murphy and Margaret Uonhi of Ballycruane. Sponsors: Daniel and Honora Uonhi." ## Notes on the reading - "Idem" means the same priest as in the entry before. "f. L." is *filium legitimum*, lawful son. - The child's name is written in full only in the margin ("Pat. Murphy"). The entry itself has the initial "P." - The mother's surname is written Uonhi, the Harrington branch name, in both the entry and the sponsors' column. - The second sponsor's forename falls at the edge of the copy first held and could not be read there. On the NLI image it reads Honora. - The second entry, of the same day, is given because it follows directly and shows the pattern. It belongs to another family (Murphy of Cahirkeem).
