Summary

The Eyeries baptism register for 4 April 1858: "Patricius Murphy" in the margin, and the entry "Patricium Murphy", lawful son of "Josephi Murphy" and Margaret "Crounhane" of Gort. Sponsors: Cornelius Crounhane and Ellena Murphy. Riobard O Dwyer's Annals of Beara have the same family under Upper Gorth: Joe Murphy and Margaret (Croumhane) O'Sullivan, eleven children, the seventh "Patrick (Apr. 1858)", of whom nothing more is printed. Croumhane is an O'Sullivan branch name, so the register's "Crounhane" is the mother's branch, not her surname. This is the second of the two Eyeries baptisms that could be that of Patrick Murphy, husband of Ellen Lyne (d. Montana 1912). It matches the year he gave in every American record. Nothing else found so far connects him to this family: his father is James on the 1881 marriage return, and his sisters and niece belong to the Ballycrovane family of the 7 April 1850 baptism. The case for each is set out on the site's analysis page. Until 4 Oct 2026 the archive knew this entry only from the April 2026 briefing. It was read that day on the NLI image and agrees with the briefing, except that the mother's forename reads as a contracted Margarita where the briefing has "Maryeta".

A flag, so that the rival candidate surfaces on Patrick's page. Claude's estimate of 4 Oct 2026 that this child is the Patrick Murphy who married Ellen Lyne is 5 in 100. Luke's recorded decision of 3 Oct 2026 shows Seamus Mor of Ballycrovane as Patrick's father; this reading is not formally closed.

# Baptism of Patrick Murphy, Gort, 4 April 1858 *Eyeries baptism register, National Library of Ireland Microfilm 04286 / 05, image 59 ("Mar. 1858 to May 1858"), left-hand page. Read on the NLI image on 4 October 2026; no copy of the image is held. The register is in abbreviated Latin. Square brackets hold the editor's expansions and doubts.* The page is ruled in four columns: the child's name, the day of the month, the entry, and the sponsors. Four baptisms are entered for 4 April under the heading for the month. This is the fourth. > **Incipit Mensis Aprilis 1858** > > | Name | Day | Entry | Sponsors | > |---|---|---|---| > | Patricius Murphy | 4 | Idem Baptisavi Patricium Murphy f. l. Josephi Murphy et Marg[ari]tae Crounhane de Gort. | Cornelius Crounhane, Ellena Murphy | In English: "The 4th. I, the same [priest], baptised Patrick Murphy, lawful son of Joseph Murphy and Margaret Crounhane of Gort. Sponsors: Cornelius Crounhane, Ellen Murphy." ## Notes on the reading - "f. l." is *filium legitimum*, lawful son. - The mother's forename is written in a contracted form. It reads as Margarita. The April 2026 briefing transcribed it "Maryeta". - The surname reads Crounhane. It could also be read Croumhane, the form the Annals of Beara print for this O'Sullivan branch. - The image is a microfilm frame of moderate sharpness. The names in this entry are clear; the three entries above it for the same day (Leary, Sullivan, Rohane) were not transcribed.

Open questions

  • What became of this Patrick. A marriage, burial or emigration record for him in Beara after 1883 would remove him as a candidate.
