Summary

Marble Catholic headstone with carved IHS monogram and floral scroll. Four Murphys commemorated. Inscription (wording as carved; stops, commas and line breaks simplified, exact text in transcription_claude.md): > Erected By > JOHN & JEREMIAH MURPHY > IN MEMORY OF THEIR BELOVED FATHER > **CORNELIUS MURPHY** > WHO DIED 2nd FEB. 1879 > AGED 61 YEARS > LORD HAVE MERCY ON HIS SOUL > AND THEIR MOTHER > **MARY** > DIED 13TH FEB. 1907 > AGED 83 YEARS > R.I.P. > **CON MURPHY** > DIED 12TH APRIL 1944 > HIS WIFE **KATIE** > DIED 25TH OCT. 1912 PROVISIONAL identification: **Cornelius Murphy (b. ~1818 Co. Cork)** is plausibly a brother of **James Murphy (b. ~1816 Ballycrovane, JJM's paternal grandfather per GEDCOM)** — they differ by only 2 years and could be siblings in the same Beara Murphy family. If so, Cornelius is JJM's great-uncle, his sons John + Jeremiah Murphy are JJM's first cousins once removed, and the Con Murphy + Katie pair (d. 1944 / 1912) are next-generation Beara Murphy cousins. The Annals of Beara (Riobárd Ó Dwyer) ingest (deferred to a future session) should resolve this generational placement. Held at family_confidence 25 pending corroboration.

People

Also mentioned

  • John Murphy · son_who_erected_stone

Son of Cornelius + Mary; co-erector of the headstone. Plausibly JJM's first cousin once removed if the Cornelius-as-brother-of-James hypothesis holds.

  • Jeremiah Murphy · son_who_erected_stone

Same. The name Jeremiah recurs in the Lyne family (Myles Lyne's father was Jeremiah Lyne) — common Beara given name.

--- newspaper: Headstone photograph (not a newspaper), a white marble Catholic headstone with a carved IHS monogram, standing on a granite plinth; the cemetery is not identified in the photograph date: 1879-02-02 (earliest death commemorated; the stone itself is undated and nothing on it says when it was carved or erected) page: single photograph of the front face of one stone transcribed_by: claude-sonnet-5-5 (Claude Code subagent), 2026-10-04 method: source.jpg (3086 x 4149 px, 300 dpi, colour, taken square-on in daylight; EXIF orientation normal, EXIF date 2016-01-04 20:05:50, software Roxio PhotoSuite, no GPS data). Viewed whole at 1200 px, then the inscription was cut into three overlapping strips (1200 x 700 px at original size, upscaled 2x with LANCZOS); the carved device and the foot of the stone were cut at 2x; the Erected By line, every date and age, and every small point were re-cut at 3x to 8x. The faint incised lettering at the foot of the slab was also tried with high-pass, normalised and embossed enhancements. Lines are shown one per line as carved. The ordinal endings TH are carved as small raised capitals with a stop beneath them and are written here as TH followed by a stop (13TH.); the ND of 2ND is carved as small capitals with no stop. Five small round points (between AGED and 61, after the comma that follows 1907, after 1944, before DIED 25TH, after 1912) are smaller than the carved stops and are shown as a middle dot; they may be deliberate points or marble flecks. "Erected By" is in blackletter on an arc; "LORD HAVE MERCY ON HIS SOUL." is in slanted capitals (shown in italics); every other line is in upright block capitals. proofed_by: claude-opus-5-5, 2026-10-04 --- [carved IHS monogram with a cross, within a pointed oval; shamrock scrollwork in the corners] > Erected By > JOHN & JEREMIAH > MURPHY. > IN MEMORY OF > THEIR BELOVED FATHER > CORNELIUS MURPHY. > WHO DIED 2ND FEB. 1879, > AGED · 61 YEARS. > *LORD HAVE MERCY ON HIS SOUL.* > AND THEIR MOTHER > MARY > DIED 13TH. Open questions

  • Specific cemetery — not visible in the photograph. Most likely a Beara-peninsula Catholic cemetery (Kilcatherine, Eyeries, or Allihies) given the family connection. User may know which.
  • Relationship of THIS Cornelius Murphy to JJM's paternal grandfather James Murphy — needs Annals of Beara confirmation. Two Murphy patriarchs of the right generation could be brothers or could be unrelated.
