The report corrects the state secretary's name to Patrick H. Kenny, deputy county assessor. ARCHIVE SIGNIFICANCE. (a) The September 1910 state AOH convention in Butte — JJM (here as plain "James Murphy" on the Business, Irish history and Abuse of Irish surnames committees and the dance floor committee) appears alongside Charles H. Gallagher (multiple committees) and a JJM-Gallagher pairing on the Irish-history thread that the user filed under. The clipping prints the resolutions chairman as "JEREMIAH J. LYNCH" — confirming Judge J. J. Lynch's given name as Jeremiah, supporting consolidation with person_judge_jeremiah_j_lynch_butte_aoh. (b) The pre-1912 JJM is visible on a state-level committee here; this is the launch pad for his county-presidency election two years later.

Narrative

The Fourteenth Biennial Convention of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Montana, meeting in Butte, adopts resolutions declaring allegiance to church and country, demanding the complete independence of Ireland, congratulating the Gaelic League on its fight over the national university, commending the Ladies' Auxiliary, and thanking those who introduced Irish history into Montana's parochial schools. State President John J. O'Meara names the convention committees — credentials, finance, resolutions, organization, insurance, press and others — while the Ladies' Auxiliary, with state president Mrs. J. C. Murphy, adopts its own resolutions thanking Father Hannan for his opening sermon, endorsing the Irish language, and designating The Butte Independent for the convention's official printing. [transcription partial; OCR heavily degraded, many names uncertain]

  • “We believe in the complete and absolute independence of Ireland”
  • “Realizing the importance to our race of spreading a knowledge of Irish history”

At that hour the committees on grievances, Irish history, auditing, credentials and rules of order had reported. The committee on Irish history suggested in their report that a joint committee be selected from the Hibernians and the ladies' auxiliary for the purpose of conferring with text-book publishers so that the very best histories of Ireland should be used in the schools, and also that the committee would see that the teaching of Irish history in the schools should obtain a legitimate place. The reports of the state president, state secretary and state treasurer were read, received and adopted. ## Talk Over Old Times. The ladies are very happy at St. George's hall and many friends are meeting and talking over old times. There are delegates present who hail from the banks of the Lee and the Shannon's shore, from lordly Ulster and from kingly Leinster, others whose forefathers made for themselves homes in southern states in the olden days and afterwards followed the lure of the gold to the great northwest. The meetings that take place informally after each session are a wonderful means of establishing friendship, and a better natured, more big-hearted, jollier crowd of lady delegates never honored this big city, than met yesterday and today at St. George's hall. ## Resolutions by Ladies. [Th]e committee on resolutions for the Ladies' auxiliary introduced the following resolutions, which were adopted by the convention: > "We, your committee on resolutions, beg leave to submit the following: > > "Resolved, That we extend to Father Hannan a vote of thanks for the beautiful sermon preached for us at the opening of our convention. > > "Resolved, That we extend to Mayor Nevin a vote of thanks for the privileges of the city. > > "Resolved, That we extend to the Hibernians and L. A. of Silver Bow county a vote of thanks for their kindness and generosity in showing us a good time. > > "Resolved, That we extend a vote of thanks to the press of the city and a special vote of thanks to The Butte Independent through the managing editor, Brother Mulcahy, for his defense of the Irish principles. > > "Resolved, That we endorse the study of the Irish language whenever possible. > > "Resolved, That each division have a mass said for the repose of the departed members once a year. > > "Resolved, That we pledge our support, morally and financially, to the cause of Ireland. > > "Resolved, That we deplore the untimely death of Rev. Father English, ex-county chaplain. > > "Resolved, That we patronize The Butte Independent for any official printing of the convention. > > "MARGARET GILLICK, Chairman. > "AGNES ATTRIDGE, > "ANNA BUCKHOUSE, > "MARGARET MONLEY, > "WINIFRED ROCK, > > "Committee." ## Ladies' Auxiliary Committees. Soon after opening yesterday afternoon's meeting, President O'Meara appointed a committee to invite the ladies' auxiliary to the Hibernia hallIrish societiesHibernia HallThe meeting hall of Butte’s Hibernians and a venue for other Irish societies; meeting notices name it again and again.More in Key terms →. Here Mayor Nevin met them and after being introduced by Mr. O'Meara extended a hearty welcome to the visitors and tendered them the freedom of the city. Mrs. J. D. Murphy also spoke briefly and told the visitors they were very welcome indeed, to Butte, and to make themselves at home. *[The paragraph runs from the foot of column 4 to column 5, below the Castoria and Ironside advertisements.]* The following are the delegates from Deer Lodge county to the Daughters of Erin convention: No. 1, Deer Lodge county—Mrs. C. Despite the cold weather, the dance at the Gardens last evening was a huge success. The visiting delegates and the local members of the order assembled in force. The music supplied by Olson's orchestra was excellent, especially the pieces played during the extras. There were 16 dances and four extras on the program. The dance was over at 12:30, and by the forethought of Manager Wharton cars for all points were waiting in the city for the last car from the Gardens. The following are the committees wh[o] looked after the arrangements for th[e] dance: Reception committee—Dan Lynch, Joh[n] Gribben, J. H. O'Meara, Anthony Lavelle, Thomas Moran. Floor committee—C. H. Gallagher, Walter Sewell, P. H. Kennedy, James Murphy, T. J. McCarthy. Door committee—John Leary, Joh[n] Ferns, John Conway, Maurice Goggin, Arthur Carroll. The name of the state secretary ha[s] been erroneously reported as P. H. Kennedy. Patrick H. Kenny, deputy count[y] assessor for Silver Bow county, is th[e] state secretary. *[Text checked against the page scan at 3x (the three "Mrs. J. D. Open questions

  • The page prints the committee as "Irish history" (Rev. M. J. Hannan, Owen Kelly, James Murphy, D. Kane, Martin Durkan, P. J. Graney; the text-book suggestion came from it); "Aims of Irish substance" was an OCR error, and the page also has a separate "Abuse of Irish surnames" committee with James Murphy and John Gribben. Still open is whether this plain "James Murphy" is JJM rather than another James Murphy.
  • The JEREMIAH J. LYNCH signature on the resolutions confirms Judge Lynch's given name. Consider consolidating person_judge_jeremiah_j_lynch_butte_aoh and Judge J. J. Lynch references into the single Jeremiah record on a future back-pass.
