## Image 1: E63B1C6C (email "Patrick Murphy Apr. 1858 ...")
### (a) What it is
A photograph of part of a **printed book page**, taken close up and in landscape (4000 x 1121 px). The type is a serif book face with a bold capitals heading, the style of Ó Dwyer's *Who Were My Ancestors? Annals of Beara* family sections. **No running header and no page number are visible**: the photo is cropped to the heading and the first four lines of text beneath it, with blank page above and below. It holds one family entry: **(A) JOE MURPHY & MARGARET (CROUMHANE) O'SULLIVAN (UPPER GORTH)**, only its opening (child (1) of 11 begins; the text breaks off at the bottom of the frame).
### (b) Verbatim transcription
> **(A) JOE MURPHY & MARGARET**
> **(CROUMHANE) O'SULLIVAN (UPPER GORTH)**
> Joe and Margaret had a family of 11: — (1) Mary
> married Jack Sheehan, Inisfernard Island, who lives
> in Eyeries, Gurteen (Ardgroom) and the Fiddlers
> Cross (Inches) at different times. They had a son [clipped: text continues beyond the frame]
Checked at full resolution: the heading reads **CROUMHANE** (with M, not N). "11: —" is printed as a colon then a spaced dash.
### (c) Names of interest
- **Joe Murphy**: heading "(A) JOE MURPHY & MARGARET (CROUMHANE) O'SULLIVAN (UPPER GORTH)". No date on the image. Townland in the heading: Upper Gorth.
- **Margaret (Croumhane) O'Sullivan**: wife of Joe Murphy; same heading; Upper Gorth. No date on the image.
- **Mary [Murphy]**: "(1) Mary married Jack Sheehan, Inisfernard Island". The text places the couple (or Jack Sheehan: see the note below) "in Eyeries, Gurteen (Ardgroom) and the Fiddlers Cross (Inches) at different times". No date.
- No Leary/O'Leary, Harrington/Uonhi or (Seer) O'Sullivan is named on this image.
Notes (inference, not printed):
- **Inference:** "Margaret (Croumhane) O'Sullivan" names an O'Sullivan woman of the Croumhane branch, so her surname is O'Sullivan and "Croumhane" is the branch name. The 1858 baptism's "Margaret Crounhane" would be the same person under the branch name. Ó Dwyer uses the same form elsewhere (e.g. "Danieleen O'Sullivan (Croumhane) ... Gorth, Urhan" in `annals-verification.md`).
- **Inference:** the "(A)" letter means this is the first of a lettered run of Murphy families on this page. Other Murphy families already transcribed in this thread are lettered (B) Seamus Mor Murphy & Peig Uonhi and (C) Jim Murphy & Julia O'Sullivan (Seer), both "(BALLYCROVANE)". Nothing on this photo shows that this (A) belongs to the same run.
- "who lives" is ambiguous in the print: it could refer to Mary and Jack Sheehan, or to Jack Sheehan alone.
- The image does **not** name a son Patrick. The list of 11 children is cut off after child (1). Emma's subject line ("Patrick Murphy Apr. 1858: Maybe the J in name you have, means Joe") is her suggestion, not something printed on this image.
### (d) Confidence
**High.** The type is large and sharp, and every word is legible. The only limit is that the frame shows so little of the page: there is no page number, and 10 of the 11 children are out of frame.

### (a) What it is
A photograph of a whole **printed book page** (portrait, 1616 x 3438 px), in the same typeface and layout as image 1. **No running header and no page number are visible.** There is blank top margin above the first line and blank paper below the last, and the frame shows no folio. The page is a left-hand page: the gutter and the next page's left margin show at the right edge, where only the first letters of about seven lines are visible (D, D, D, D[?], d, I[?], I[?]), too clipped to read. A few clipped line-end characters at the far left edge are also unreadable.
**Handwritten marks** in red/pink ink: an underline beneath "(7) Patrick", an underline beneath "(Apr. 1858)", and an asterisk-like star in the left margin beside the "(Apr. 1858)" line. **Inference:** the sender added these to flag the entry, which fits her subject line.
It holds three family entries:
1. The end of **(A) Joe Murphy & Margaret (Croumhane) O'Sullivan (Upper Gorth)**. The page opens mid-sentence with "Johnny who, after his mother Mary died, ...". **Inference:** this continues image 1, which breaks off at "They had a son". The sentence joins seamlessly, and image 1 is probably the foot of the preceding right-hand page.
2. **(B) JOE MURPHY & NORRY HARRINGTON (CAUSKEY) (UPPER GORTH)**, complete.
3. **(C) HENRY (JOE) MURPHY & KATE O'SULLIVAN (SUONISH) (UPPER GORTH)**, complete.

> Harry (Quinlan) Murphy, Dublin — a 1st cousin of
> Tim Murphy, Cahirkeem West, (5) Patrick (Mar. 3rd

All children's dates in family (A) were checked at 2x zoom: 1849, 1851, 1852, 1855, **Dec. 1856** (Timothy), **Apr. 1858** (Patrick), **Dec. 1859** (Michael), 1862, 1865, 1867. The asterisk before "Henry" is printed. Ó Dwyer marks the child who settles in the home farm this way. The punctuation "Cahirkeem West, (5)" (comma, not semicolon) is as printed.
### (c) Names of interest
Family (A), Joe Murphy & Margaret (Croumhane) O'Sullivan, Upper Gorth. The children's surname Murphy is implied by the family heading and is not printed beside each name:
- **Joe Murphy**, the father: "his being reared in Joe Murphy's"; place "Gorth". No dates.
- **Mary**, child (1), "his mother Mary" (i.e. Mary who married Jack Sheehan, image 1). She had died by the time her son Johnny was reared in Gorth. Her son **Johnny [Sheehan]**, "known as Sheehan Joe", "went to Butte, Montana, in later years". No dates.
- (2) **Joe** (Apr. 1849): settled in the home farm; married Norry (Causkey) Harrington.
- (3) **Johanna** (Mar. 1851) died young. (4) **John** (Dec. 1852). (5) **Margaret** (Mar. 1855) lived in the home farm. (6) **Timothy** (Dec. 1856).
- (7) **Patrick (Apr. 1858)**: nothing more is printed about him. There is no marriage, no emigration and no death. His entry is the one marked in red ink.
- (8) **Michael** (Dec. 1859). (9) **Johanna** (July 1862) "the second Johanna". (10) **Jeremiah** (Mar. 1865). (11) **Nora** (Mar. 1867).
Family (B), Joe Murphy & Norry Harrington (Causkey), Upper Gorth. The book says 11 children and lists seven:
- (1) **Mary** (June 1877) went to Butte, Montana; "became Mrs. Murphy". (2) **John** (Mar. 1879) went to Butte, Montana. (3) **Patrick** (Mar. 1881) "was in Butte, Montana. Later died at home". (4) **Hannah Marie** (Dec. 1886) "became Mrs. Buckley in Butte, Montana". (5) **Agnes** (Aug. 1890) married Patrick Connolly in Butte. (6) **Liz** (Feb. 1895) died in Butte. (7) **Henry** (Aug. 1897) settled in the home farm.
Family (C), Henry (Joe) Murphy & Kate O'Sullivan (Suonish), Upper Gorth:
- **Mary Patricia** (Mar. 14th 1924), **John** (Apr. 20th 1925), **Joseph** (June 1st 1926), **Stella (Nora Stella)** (Sept. 25th 1927), **Patrick** (Mar. 3rd 1930).
- Other Murphys in (C): **Catherine Murphy** from Midleton, Co. Cork (m. Joseph, in London); **Harry (Quinlan) Murphy**, Dublin (m. Stella); **Tim Murphy**, Cahirkeem West.
Harrington / Causkey:
- **Norry (Causkey) Harrington**: wife of Joe (b. Apr. 1849); "a sister of Tade Causkey".
- **Jack (Causkey) Harrington** and **Kate Harrington**, Knockane, Eyeries: Norry's parents.
- **Tade Causkey**: Norry's brother. **Inference:** his surname is Harrington (Causkey).
- **Katie Harrington**, Urhan: wife of Dan O'Sullivan (Suonish).
O'Sullivan: only the (Suonish) branch appears (**Kate**, **Tim** and **Dan O'Sullivan (Suonish)**, Urhan). **No O'Sullivan (Seer), no Croumhane/Crounhane, no Leary/O'Leary and no Uonhi** are named on this image.
Inferences, not printed:
- **Inference:** "(7) Patrick (Apr. 1858)", son of Joe Murphy and Margaret (Croumhane) O'Sullivan of Upper Gorth, corresponds to the 1858 baptism of a Patrick, son of Joseph Murphy and Margaret Crounhane of Gort. The month, year, parents' forenames and townland agree. This is Emma's point in her subject line ("Maybe the J in name you have, means Joe").
- **Inference:** the book records nothing to connect this Patrick with Ellen Lyne, the 1881 marriage or Butte. The page does show that this Upper Gorth Murphy family had strong Butte links: the grandson Johnny "Sheehan Joe" and six children of Joe (b. 1849) went there. That is circumstantial only.
### (d) Confidence
**High** for the transcription. The type is clear throughout, the dates were checked at zoom, and no word is uncertain. The page number and running header are **not recoverable** from this photo.
