Summary

Four-page typewritten employment resume of **James J. Murphy Jr.** (= person_james_j_murphy_jr_la, son of JJM Sr the LA-d. 1938 Murphy). Written when he was 44 years old (so ~1958 — the filename "1960" appears to be a rounded user-labeling; the math is 1914 + 44 = 1958). First-person family document, machine-typed, signed identity self. **Personal data**: - Name: James J. Murphy (Jr.) - Address: 1881 Morgan Lane, Anaheim, California - Telephone: JEfferson 4-5469 - Age: 44 - Birthdate: **20 March 1914** - Place of Birth: **Butte, Montana** - Married: **22 October 1936** (to Marie A. Schueller — per the corresponding marriage-intention clipping; the actual wedding 15 days after the 7 Oct 1936 intention filing) - Children: **Six**, ages 21, 18, 13, 10, 5, 4 at writing (b. ~1937, 1940, 1945, 1948, 1953, 1954) **Education**: - Loyola High School, LA, 1927-1931 - Loyola University, LA, 1932-1934 (Pre Legal) - Loyola Law College, LA, 1934-1937 (Night Session) **Hobbies**: All sports, particularly golf and swimming. **School activities**: Sports, particularly football; Debating Society. **Employment record**: 1. **Lockheed Aircraft, Burbank CA** — Feb 1943 to June 1946. Supervisor C. Snow. Salary $275-$450/mo. Last position Supervisor of Parts and Service Sales Department. 2. **Leo J. Mayberg, LA** — June 1946 to June 1948. Mr. F. Buehler. Wholesale Norge appliance salesman. 3. **Kelvinator Sales Corp, 2211 Davie St LA** — June 1948 to Feb 1950. Mr. J. D. Downing. Wholesale Kelvinator appliances. 4. **Kelvinator Sales Corp, LA** — Feb 1950 to Aug 1955. Branch Manager San Diego + Imperial Counties. 5. **Kelvinator Sales Corp, 2819 Elliott, Seattle WA** — Aug 1955 to Mar 1957. **Zone Manager Northwest** (Washington, Oregon, Northern Idaho). 27 employees. 6. **Kelvinator Sales Corp, 2012 NW Vaughn, Portland OR** — Mar 1957 to July 1958. Branch Manager Oregon (demotion from Zone Manager). 7. **Kelvinator Sales Corp, 2211 Davie St LA** — July 1958 to present. Wholesale salesman. **Page 4 narrative**: Explains he wants to change jobs because the appliance industry was "unsound" (Kelvinator, Frigidaire, GE all abolished high-level positions ~1956-1958, causing chain-reaction demotions). Wanted to stay in Southern California rather than relocate again. Demotion from Seattle Zone Manager to Oregon Branch Manager (with family climate dislike of the Pacific Northwest) drove the move back to LA. **Book material**: an evocative self-portrait of the 2nd- generation Murphy in California. Pre-WW2 Loyola Law education + wartime Lockheed Aircraft + post-war appliance-industry career arc. JJM Sr (d. 1938 LA) was a Hennessy's clothing manager; JJM Jr followed into wholesale sales but in appliances, not clothing. The Murphy-as-salesman career trait carried into the second generation.

My reason for wanting to change employment is occasioned primarily by the unsound condition of the appliance industry. It is this condition which brought about my demotion from Zone Manager in Seattle to Branch Manager of Oregon. Kelvinator, Frigidaire and General Electric, starting about two years ago, abolished certain high level positions. The men handling these positions were trusted, reliable, and experienced so in most instances were not released but assumed their former positions. This resulted in a chain reaction and caused the demotion and relocation of those on down the ladder. My reason for leaving Portland was voluntary. My family and I did not like the climate of the Northwest and wished to return to Southern California. I was transferred at my request. My experience in the past has been very broad. It has included direct selling, sales training of both employees and dealer personnel, sales promotion and advertising, preparing sales budgets and forecasts, setting up territory potentials and commissions, interviewing and hiring salesmen and comptrollers, supervision of sales office personnel and their functions, responsibility for all financial facets of a zone operation (including forecasts and credit and collection), and the buying, warehousing and transportation of merchandise. A second reason for wanting a change of employment is occasioned by the fact that an advancement with my company would take me again out of Southern California. This I do not desire at this time. However, I have been subtly approached in this regard. [No signature, date or closing is typed after the last line.]

  • Six children — names not given in the resume; would map onto the user's GEDCOM JJM Jr descendants. The 1948-born child is plausibly Daniel Mark Murphy (the user's father per GEDCOM). Worth checking the GEDCOM to identify which of JJM Jr's six children is the user's father (= Daniel Mark Murphy) per user confirmation 2026-05-27.
  • The resume was likely written 1958 (age 44 + March 1914 birth). Filename "1960" is a user labeling round-up; the document itself dates to between July 1958 ("July, 1958 to Present time") and 19 March 1959 (age 44; born 20 March 1914, so 45 from 20 March 1959).
