Summary

Page from the New York passenger and crew list (Castle Garden / Ellis Island), Roll M237 1820-1897, image 373/708. Ship and exact arrival date are at the top of the manifest page (not visible in this crop) — Roll M237 contains pre-1897 (i.e., pre-Ellis-Island, Castle Garden era) NY arrivals. Murphy family entries (group 120 on this manifest page): - **Ellen Murphy**, 30, F, Matron, destination **Miles City Montana** - **James Murphy**, 4, M, Child, destination Miles City Montana Adjacent entry just above (row 9 of family 119 or similar): - **Murphy**, 25, F (line 119) — surname written out; no first name is written, only a ditto dot under Marg^t of line 118 (probably Margaret by ditto). Not inside the brace that joins Ellen and James. Possibly a sister-in-law travelling with Ellen. DATE AND AGE (revised 4 Oct 2026): 1. **Ellen and James crossed together**, bound for **Miles City, Montana**. 2. **Date: 25 Apr 1892** by Ancestry's index of the roll (80 that the date belongs to this sheet). It agrees with the 1900 census ("immigrated 1892") and James's 1918 "resided in this community for 26 years". Ellen's 30 fits 1892. 3. **Age discrepancy, kept as printed.** The clerk wrote James "4" (read at 97), but he was baptised in July 1883 and was 8 in April 1892. Luke's call (4 Oct 2026): this is James, and his age was given about 4 years low, as his father's age was understated by about 8 years; perhaps to save on the fare (Luke's suggestion; no source). The "~1887" date this record carried until 4 Oct came from the printed age and is withdrawn.

On the right-hand border there is a white scratch line at the top (level with lines 105 to 107) and a small bright spot level with line 111. - Foot: the viewer's control bar (shown above); below it the lower edge of the sheet and the film border.

Open questions

  • Ship name + exact arrival date — not visible in this image crop. The manifest page would have the steamship name and date at the top. Worth a vision pass with --focus on the page header.
  • The "Murphy 25 F" passenger immediately above Ellen — first name not written (only a ditto dot under Marg^t, line 118). Could be Catherine Murphy (Patrick's sister) or another relative. Vision pass would resolve.
  • James's printed age 4 against his true age 8 in April 1892 -- understated (Luke's reading), or a clerk's error. The heading page (roll 586, images before 373) would at least fix the date and ship.
