Transcribed 2026-09-26 from the three JPEG attachments (each 3000 x 4000 px), cropped into column segments with PIL, converted to greyscale with autocontrast and read at full resolution. Doubtful words were checked with further zoomed crops.
Conventions:
- Paragraphs are run together. Line breaks are not kept, except that a word hyphenated at a line break is shown as `Direen-/avogig` (the `/` marks the printed line break).
- `[?]` marks an uncertain reading. `[clipped]` marks text cut off by the page edge, the gutter or the photo frame.
- Typographic quotes are shown as plain `"`. Spelling, capitals, numbering, asterisks and punctuation follow the print, including inconsistencies (e.g. heading "DENNIS" but text "Denis"; "Cummeendeach" and "Cummen-/deach").
- Handwritten notes (Emma's, by inference) are given separately and marked HANDWRITTEN.
- **None of the three pages carries a running header or book title.** Identifying the book as Riobárd Ó Dwyer's *Who Were My Ancestors?* is an **inference** from the layout (numbered children with birth dates, family headings with townland in brackets), not something the images show.

HANDWRITTEN: START HERE LUKE
O'SULLIVAN (KEAGH)
(DROUMBEG)
This section of the O'Sullivan (Keagh) family came over from Castlekilty (just to the east of Eskadower, Lauragh, Co. Kerry) and settled originally in Carrigaphrechane, close to Paddy (Dan Mor) O'Driscoll's house, around the year 1800. Though they were of the O'Sullivan (Keagh) family, the first two brothers who came to Carrigaphrechane were known as Sean Seer [HANDWRITTEN underline under "Sean Seer"] and Paddy Seer. The "Seer" part came from the Irish word for a tradesman. Sean & Paddy were noted tradesmen and boatbuilders. They also had a sister who married Morty Minihane (O'Driscoll), of Carrigaphrechane. She was grandmother of Dan Mor O'Driscoll. Hence Patie (Jimmy) O'Sullivan, Droumbeg, and Paddy (Dan Mor) O'Driscoll, Carrigaphrechane, were 3rd cousins. Sean Seer's brother, Paddy ("Seer") O'Sullivan lived in Carrigaphrechane in what is now Jerry Crowley's house. Paddy "Seer" had three sons;- John (married in Carrigaphrechane to Margaret O'Shea of Direen-/avogig), Seamus, and Paddy (Junior). Seamus married a Peig Moriarty and settled down in the Drombohilly district of Ardea, Co. Kerry. Seamus and Peig had two sons, Flor and Paddy. Flor stayed in Drombohilly but Paddy emigrated to Butte, Montana, and married Kate O'Shea, daughter of Batt O'Shea and Norry O'Shea, Cummeendeach. Paddy and Kate returned and settled down in Kate's farm in Cummen-/deach. They in turn were the parents of Katie O'Sullivan who married Murt (Strock) McCarthy of Glenbeg who came "cliamhain isteach" to the [continues at the top of p. 54]

### (a) What it is
A photograph of the same book, showing all of **printed page 54** (folio "— 54 —" at the foot of the left column) in two columns. There is **no running header**. The page tilts slightly and the lower left is shadowed, but everything is legible. p. 54 is the verso of the p. 53 leaf and continues its text directly: p. 53 ends "…to the" and p. 54 begins "Cummeendeach farm."
Also visible:
- At the right edge, five clipped line-starts of p. 55 ("17t…", "to L…", "O'M…", "Gle…", "hom…"). They match the foot of the p. 55 left column in Image 3 ("17th 1946", "to London", "O'Mahony", "Glengarriff", "home").
- At the far left, a few meaningless letter fragments from another sheet ("ic", "M", "fi", "w", "t", "I").
- A yellow sticky note under the left edge of the book, with no visible writing.
Family entries on p. 54:
1. End of the O'SULLIVAN (KEAGH) (DROUMBEG) introduction: Paddy "Seer"'s line in Butte, and the statement on the descendants of Sean "Seer".
2. (A) SEAN "SEER" O'SULLIVAN (KEAGH) (DROUMBEG)
3. (B) TADHG ("SEER") O'SULLIVAN & MARY O'CONNOR (DROUMBEG). Child (3), **Catherine**, "married Jack O'Leary of Lack who settled in Foromanes".
4. (C) FLOR O'SULLIVAN & JULIA HARRINGTON (DROUMBEG)
5. (D) FLOR O'SULLIVAN & NORA O'SHEA (DROUMBEG), which begins here and continues on p. 55
HANDWRITTEN on this page:
- Top margin of the right column: a **blue** star whose tail points down to the word "Catherine" (first line of the right column).
- Beside the star, in **black** ink: "Connection / LUKE".
- To the right, in **blue** ink, an arrow then "bro. of[?] / my grgrand[m?] / Cath" (three lines, sloping upward). Rotated and zoomed, the reading is "bro." then a looped "of" (it could be read as "g" or "9"), then "my grgrand" followed by a letter that looks most like "m" (but could be "a" or "n"), then "Cath" on its own line. **Inference, not what the page says:** probably "brother of my great-grandmother Cath[erine]". The note does not say whose brother is meant; the arrow sits above "Jack O'Leary of Lack".
- A **blue** vertical stroke in the left margin of the left column, beside "Sean "Seer" O'Sullivan (Keagh) were the Flor / O'Sullivans' and Patie (Jimmy) O'Sullivan, / Droumbeg, etc."
- A dark pen stroke under the "(3)" that ends the left column. It links "(3)" to "Catherine married Jack O'Leary…" at the top of the right column.
The words "Murphy", "Lyne", "Scrahan" and "Goirtín" do **not** occur on p. 54.

Mary O'Shea was a sister of Tady O'Shea and an aunt of Peter O'Shea, Claondaire, so as a result of all these marriages, the following people were 1st cousins: Patie (Jimmy) O'Sullivan, Droumbeg; Flor O'Sullivan, Droumbeg (father of Mrs. Joe McCarthy, Ardgroom Village etc.); Dan O'Neill, The Road, Coulagh; Jim O'Leary, Foromanes; Jack (Flor) Harrington, Caolinches (or Inches as it is now called); and Mrs. Batt D. (Reading notes: these printed spellings were checked in zoomed crops and are as printed: "Maire Uonhi", "Shearhig", "Cealinches" and then "Caolinches", "Cumeendeach" (one m here, "Cummeendeach" at the top of the page), "Jim Shea" (no O'), "Batt Rahilly" as father of "Michael O'Reilly", "(born Oct 1843)" with no full stop after Oct, and the double space in "Paddy later sold".)
### (c) Names in scope, p. 54
**Murphy**: none on p. 54.
**Leary / O'Leary**
- **Jack O'Leary of Lack**, "who settled in Foromanes", married **Catherine**, child (3) of Tadhg ("Seer") O'Sullivan and Mary O'Connor of Droumbeg. No birth date is printed for Catherine. Her siblings' dates run from Mary (Oct 1843) and Peig (Nov. 1845) to Jimmy (May 1858), so Catherine was probably born about 1844 (**inference** from birth order, not printed).
- **Jim O'Leary, Foromanes**, is named among the "1st cousins" produced by "all these marriages". **Inference:** he is presumably a son of Catherine and Jack O'Leary, since he is listed alongside the children of her siblings (Flor, Brigid, Mary, Jimmy).
- Emma's handwritten note next to "Catherine married Jack O'Leary of Lack" reads "Connection LUKE" and "→ bro. of[?] my grgrand[m?] Cath" (see (a)).
- **No Murphy married to an O'Leary appears on this page, and there is no James Murphy or Mary O'Leary.**
**Lyne**: none. There is a **Lynch**: Mary Lynch, daughter of Johnny Lynch and Maggie Harrington, Eyeriesbeg, married Jim O'Sullivan (b. Dec. 9th 1905) in Boston.
**Shea / O'Shea**
- **Gertie O'Shea**, sister of **Teresa O'Shea (Mrs. Dan O'Dwyer) of Pulleen, Ardgroom**, married Paddy O'Sullivan (grandson of the Paddy who emigrated) in Butte.
- **Nora O'Shea, Reenavaude**, married Jack O'Sullivan (son (2) of Sean "Seer") in Carrigaphrechane. She was a sister of **James O'Shea** and an aunt of **Jim Shea** (settled in Reenavaude) and of **"Black" Jack O'Shea** (settled in Droumard).
- **Maire (Stokes) O'Shea, Claondaire**, an aunt of **Tadhg (Stokes) O'Shea**, married Flor (son (5) of Sean "Seer"), who settled near Jer O'Neill's place, Direenavogig.

- **Ellen O'Shea**, Upper Pallace, wife of Batt Rahilly and mother of Michael O'Reilly (who married Kate O'Sullivan, b. Oct. 15th 1875).
- **Nora O'Shea**, daughter of **Batt O'Shea** and **Norry O'Shea, Cumeendeach, Ardgroom**, married Flor O'Sullivan (b. July 19th 1877) "in the home farm" (Droumbeg).
**O'Sullivan (Seer)**
- **Paddy** ("Seer"'s son; the text says "Seamus O'Sullivan's brother Paddy") sold the family's Carrigaphrechane portion to Jerry Crowley's grandfather and emigrated to Butte.
- His son **Paddy** married Mary O'Driscoll (sister of Paddy (Dan Mor) O'Driscoll) in Butte.
- Their son **Paddy** married Gertie O'Shea in Butte.

### (d) Confidence: **HIGH** for the printed text of p. 54; **MEDIUM-LOW** for Emma's blue handwritten note
The whole page is sharp. In the note, "of" and the last letter of "grgrand?" are uncertain, and "Cath" is clear.

### (a) What it is
A photograph of the same open book on a terracotta-tiled surface. It shows all of **printed page 55** (folio "— 55 —" centred at the foot) in two columns. There is **no running header**. The top of the page is shadowed by the photographer, and the page is tilted by about 2–3°, so deskewed crops were used to fix the line order.
Also visible:
- At the left edge, a clipped strip of the right column of p. 54. It repeats text from Image 2 ("Lack who settled", "married her 3rd", "(8) \*Jimmy", "aidhg Seer, settled", "nanes; Jack (Flor)", "(D)… AN & NORA O'SHEA", "(2) John (Nov. 10th"…).
- Emma's blue note on p. 54, seen from another angle: "grgrand m / Cath".
- The yellow sticky note under the book (top left).
- At the right edge, the fore-edges of several lower leaves, fanned out and tattered.
Family entries on p. 55:
1. Tail of (D) FLOR O'SULLIVAN & NORA O'SHEA (DROUMBEG), children (2)–(9).
2. (C1) JIMMY (THAIDHG "SEER") O'SULLIVAN & MARY O'SHEA (DROUMBEG). This entry names **four Murphy marriages or descendants**.
3. (D) PATIE (JIMMY) O'SULLIVAN & JULIA DOWNING (DROUMBEG)
4. O'SULLIVAN (KEAGH) (PULLEEN): Flor O'Sullivan & Nora O'Driscoll. Their daughter Kate was "marred first in Pulleen to a Timothy O'Leary".
5. (B) MORT O'SULLIVAN & ABBEY O'SULLIVAN (PULLEEN), children (1)–(5). It continues on p. 56, which was not photographed.
HANDWRITTEN, not on p. 55 itself. Two notes are on the outer margin of a leaf (or loose slip) lying **under** p. 55. They are visible only where that leaf sticks out beyond p. 55's fore-edge. A pixel profile shows each ink trace starting exactly at the edge of p. 55, so the first letters of every word are hidden:
- **Red ink**, level with the Nora/Con/Kate lines: "…ack / …ery / …(" [clipped]. **Inference only:** possibly "[J]ack / [O'L]eary".
- **Blue ink**, lower down: "…ister / of / [star] / …atg[a?] / …ynd[?]." [clipped]. The first line may be "[S]ister". The last two words are unreadable (**inference only**: the last might end "[L]ynch", but this is very uncertain). The page this leaf belongs to cannot be identified.
The words "Scrahan", "Goirtín" and "Lyne" do **not** occur on p. 55. "Gorteen, Ardgroom" does occur (see (c)). James Murphy and Mary O'Leary do not occur.

O'SULLIVAN (KEAGH)
(PULLEEN)
These were the great-grandparents of the present John (Morty) O'Sullivan, Pulleen. Nora O'Driscoll — an aunt of Dan Mor O'Driscoll — was daughter of Morty Minihane, Carrigaphrechane (and previously Pulleen). Six children of Flor and Nora are traced: (1) \*Mort settled down in the home farm and married Abbey (Curney) O'Sullivan, daughter of Curney (or Cornelius) O'Sullivan and Mary Houlihan, Pulleen; (2) Tim (born June 1843) went to the U.S.A.; (3) Nora was the second wife of Murt (Philib) O'Sullivan, son of Philip O'Sullivan, Pulleen; (4) Con (Apr. 1847) was living in Ardgroom Village (in the house where Mrs. Coughlan was later) and was married to Johanna O'Sullivan from Allihies, a cousin of Jack and Mag (Mhickie) Harrington, Urhan; (5) Kate, one of the eldest, was marred first in Pulleen to a Timothy O'Leary. They had two children: (a) Mary (Mar. 1860) and (b) Michael (Sept. 1866). Timothy O'Leary died and Kate later married in the place to John Godder; (6) Another son of Flor O'Sullivan and Nora O'Driscoll was drowned going across the Kenmare Bay to Sneem, Co. Kerry, with a boatload of sheep. The boat overturned. Also drowned with him were the O'Sullivan (Cohu) woman's husband, Michael Lynch of Droumbeg and his son. Jackessy Crowley of Carrigaphrechane (and later Ardgroom Village) survived and also saved his sister Mary (Mrs. Cain O'Connor of Pallace and later Claondaire).
(B) MORT O'SULLIVAN & ABBEY O'SULLIVAN
(PULLEEN)
Mort and Abbey had 10 children:- (1) John (Feb. 22nd 1873) went first to the Calumet Mines, Michigan, U.S.A. and married Margaret O'Sullivan of Colleros, Lauragh — a sister of Jack Owen. John and Margaret came back to live in Pulleen and had three children there: (a) Flor (Feb. 16th 1904) (b) Mary (Mar. 25th 1905) and (c) John (Nov. 8th 1908). Flor later married in Butte, Montana, to Catherine O'Neill of Adrigole and settled in Derrimihin, Castletownbere. His daughter Rose married Jerry Harrington of Buaile, Dirrivore. Margaret O'Sullivan died in Pulleen and John and the children returned to the U.S.A. (2) Mary (Aug. 9th 1875) went to Calumet, Michigan, U.S.A. and married Pete O'Connell — brother of Bill O'Connell — son of William O'Connell and Abbey O'Connell, Curragh (near Droumard); (3) Kate (Mar. 15th 1877) married Michael Murphy, son of John Murphy and Frances Healy, Reenavaude, and was mother of John and Tim Murphy etc.; (4) Flor (June 15th 1879) went to the Calumet Mines, Michigan, and married Hannah Murphy, daughter of Curly Murphy and Brigid Harrington, Gortnabulliga. (5) Mike (Sept. 15th 1884) went first to the Calumet Mines. Later [continues on p. 56, not photographed]
(Reading notes: "marred" is a misprint in the book and is kept. There is no "(A)" heading before "These were the great-grandparents…", as printed. The line order in the lower right column was confirmed in deskewed crops.)

## Summary across the three images
- The three photos are **consecutive printed pages 53, 54 and 55** of one book: p. 53 runs straight on to p. 54, and p. 54 to p. 55. None has a running header or title. Attributing them to Ó Dwyer's *Who Were My Ancestors?* is an inference from the format.
- They cover the **O'Sullivan (Keagh) family known as "Seer"**:
- Sean Seer and Paddy Seer came from Castlekilty to **Carrigaphrechane** "around the year 1800".
- Sean's son **Tadhg "Seer"** lived in Lacariach, Reenavaude North, then Droumbeg.
- Tadhg's sons were **Flor** and **Jimmy (Thaidhg Seer)**.
- Also covered are the Lynches of Droumbeg (p. 53) and the Keagh O'Sullivans of Pulleen (p. 55).
- **None of the requested terms "Scrahan", "Goirtín" or "Lyne" appears.** "Gorteen, Ardgroom" appears once (p. 55).
- **No James Murphy appears. No Mary O'Leary married to a Murphy appears. No marriage of about 1834 appears.** No O'Leary on these pages is married to a Murphy.
- O'Leary marriages on these pages:
- **Catherine** (child (3) of Tadhg "Seer" and Mary O'Connor; undated, perhaps born about 1844 by birth order, which is an inference) "married Jack O'Leary of Lack who settled in Foromanes" (p. 54). Emma starred this line and wrote "Connection LUKE" beside it.
- **Jim O'Leary, Foromanes**, appears in the 1st-cousin list (p. 54).
- **Kate O'Sullivan of Pulleen** "was marred first in Pulleen to a Timothy O'Leary", with children Mary (Mar. 1860) and Michael (Sept. 1866) (p. 55).
- Murphy sentences:
- p. 53: Eamonn (an Chnoic) Murphy's Droumard farm; Helen Murphy, daughter of Jeremiah Murphy and Rose Duggan, Ardagh Cross, Bere Island; Jack Murphy, Milleens.
- p. 55: Margaret O'Sullivan (Oct. 21st 1890) married **Jerry Murphy of Knockura, Castletownbere, in Butte**; Brigid (Jan. 14th 1893) married Mike Murphy (son of Paddy (Cait) Murphy and Nora Harrington, Ahabrock) in Seattle; Kate (Mar. 15th 1877) married Michael Murphy (son of John Murphy and Frances Healy, Reenavaude); Flor (June 15th 1879) married Hannah Murphy (daughter of Curly Murphy and Brigid Harrington, Gortnabulliga).
- Emma's handwritten notes:
- p. 53: "START HERE LUKE".
- p. 54: "Connection / LUKE" and "→ bro. of[?] / my grgrand[m?] / Cath". **Inference:** "brother of my great-grandmother Cath[erine]". Whose brother is meant is not written.
