Summary

Continuation of the front-page report on the first direct primary. The canvass must begin within 72 hours of the last returns; Clerk and Recorder Kehoe is expected to start on Friday. About 6,000 votes were cast, "with the democrats in the lead"; the Republicans did not turn out as expected, the Progressives polled perhaps 175 in the 68 precincts, and the Socialists' yellow wing nominated the full ticket unopposed. "At neither the republican nor democratic headquarters today were there approximately complete returns", and the Republican sheriff, county attorney and coroner are in doubt; but "among the democrats there is no doubt as to the names of the persons selected for the county offices", only about two or three members of the legislative ticket. Sheriff Driscoll leads; Matt Canning is nominated over County Attorney McCaffery; Kehoe leads Albert Dockstader about two to one; Harry Gallwey for state senator easily defeated Kerr Beadle. The Democratic list then reads "County treasurer—John J. Harrington." J. J. Murphy, who had announced for that nomination on 19 Aug, is not named anywhere in the story, nor are his rivals T. Harold Jennings and Homer E. Townsend. The other parties' treasurer nominees: Joseph Lutey (Republican), Eugene J. McMahon (Progressive), Frank Curran (Socialist). No vote figure for the treasurer race is printed.

# OFFICIAL COUNT MUST BE MADE TO TELL STORY (Continued from Page One.) *The Butte Daily Post, Wednesday evening, August 26, 1914, p. 5, column 4 (header and text to the foot of the column) and column 5 (from "ahead of his nearest opponent", below the personals column, through the lists of nominees). Read from the page image on 20 Oct 2026: an Opus transcription of full-resolution crops, checked against Apple Vision OCR and a Sonnet reading of the tiles. The front-page half is clipping 1914-08-26_butte-daily-post_official-count-must-be-made-primary-returns-locked.* [column 4] OFFICIAL COUNT MUST BE MADE TO TELL STORY (Continued from Page One.) The law further provides that the canvass shall be commenced within 72 hours after all the returns have been received. It is quite probably Mr. Kehoe will commence the canvass on Friday, although if everything is in readiness he may start the work tomorrow. The total vote cast yesterday was about 6,000, with the democrats in the lead. The republicans did not turn out as expected, while the vote of the socialists was small and the progressives did not, it is believed, have more than a total of 175 in the 68 precincts. In several of the precincts the progressives did not receive a single vote. In Divide the returns show that only eight votes were cast out of a total of 31 registered, and of the eight, seven were divided between the two old parties, the socialists receiving one vote. Charles S. Henderson, on the republican ticket, received five votes, and Sheriff Driscoll got one, Davey receiving two. Yellows Win Victory. It was expected that there would be a lively contest between the red and yellow wings of the socialist party, but this failed to materialize and the yellows easily succeeded in nominating the full ticket. At neither the republican nor democratic headquarters today were there approximately complete returns. Among some of the republicans there is a doubt as to who is elected as candidate for sheriff, county attorney and coroner, but the following list of candidates is believed to be as near correct as can be secured until the official count is made: Republicans. State senator—T. A. Grigg. Representatives in the legislature—Peter M. Bonino, John L. Carroll, J. E. Cowperthwaite, Frank W. Haskins, W. J. Helman, J. B. Henderson, Alexander Meagher, John H. Miles, E. J. Rinckel, Lewis A. Smith, W. J. Thomas and Stephen Wright. County commissioner—John M. Barber. County clerk—Paul A. Ozanne. County attorney—John A. Smith. Sheriff—Charles S. Henderson. Treasurer—Joseph Lutey. Assessor—Eugene Thornton. Auditor—W. B. Brinton. Coroner—William Odgers. Superintendent of schools—Frances Brome. Surveyor—Edgar J. Strasburger. Justice of the peace, Silver Bow township—Charles Oke Kelly. Constable, Silver Bow township—Wm. D. McClain. Justice of the peace, South Butte township—Charles Rowe. Among the democrats there is no doubt as to the names of the persons selected for the county offices, but there is a dispute as to two or three members of the legislative ticket. Sheriff Driscoll is [column 5] ahead of his nearest opponent, while Attorney Canning was nominated over County Attorney McCaffery by at least 500 [?] votes. Clerk and Recorder Kehoe is leading Albert Dockstader, his nearest opponent, by about two to one. Harry Gallwey for state senator easily defeated his nearest opponent, Kerr Beadle. The following is a list of the candidates nominated: The Democrats. Senator—Harry Gallwey. Representatives in the legislature—Oliver Choiniere, James Doner, Frank Corr, Louis Donovan, John V. Dwyer, John Egan, Jerry Flanigan, Ralph W. Foltz, W. J. McMahon, James E. McNally, Ben Wilson and Frank Hayes. County commissioner—Otto Simonson. County clerk and recorder—Dave Kehoe. County attorney—Matt Canning. Sheriff—Timothy Driscoll. County treasurer—John J. Harrington. Assessor—P. S. Sullivan. Auditor—R. J. Campana. Coroner—Dan Drew. Superintendent of schools—Grace E. Rabbitt. Surveyor—Charles M. Feeney. Public administrator—T. J. Harrington. Justices of the peace, Silver Bow township—John Doran and John Shea. Constables, Silver Bow township—Dan Harrington and Ed Gilmour. Justices of the peace, South Butte township—John Kerrigan. Constable, South Butte township—John J. McGrath. There are some who contend that Maurice Kiley, Joe Mudro and John McCarthy are among the successful ones on the legislative ticket. The men selected by the progressives and socialists are as follows: Progressives. State senator—Claude Doran. Representatives in the legislature—Joseph Chauvin, Frank D. Darnell, Quincy G. Handy, John L. Harrison, Eugene A. Hines, Charles F. Jones, Oliver C. Kirkwold, John Metz, Alonzo B. Morris, George C. Thomson, George T. Wade and Adam Weitz. County commissioner—William G. Schmidt. Carlisle and J. C. Conn. Constables, South Butte township—William J. Little and Frank Wills. --- *Reading notes.* "500 [?] votes": the first digit is worn; the OCR read 300, the 12x enlargement looks like 5. "Kuehhorn [?]": the second h is blotted, possibly Kuehnhorn. The last lines of column 4 ("...legislative ticket. Sheriff Driscoll is") are blurred at the foot of the page but secure from context; no line is lost at the join, column 5 beginning "ahead of his nearest opponent". Kept as printed: "It is quite probably Mr. Kehoe", "Sheriff—Harvey A. Smith," with a comma, "Senator—" in the Democratic list against "State senator—" in the others. Line-end hyphenation joined (to-morrow as tomorrow, the paper's style elsewhere in the issue).
