Summary
The evening after Montana's first direct primary (Tuesday 25 Aug 1914), the Post reports that the names of several county and legislative nominees cannot be settled until the official canvass: the returns are with the clerk and recorder but "the boxes are locked and the tally sheets sealed". Had the election judges reported complete returns on a separate sheet as both parties asked, the names would be known; as it is there is doubt about "two or three members of the legislature on the democratic ticket" and about the Republican sheriff, county attorney, county commissioner and coroner. Under the primary law the clerk and recorder canvasses with two justices of the peace. Continued on page 5, where the lists of nominees are printed (see the crossref): the Democratic nominee for county treasurer is John J. Harrington, not J. J. Murphy, who had announced for the office on 19 Aug.
