Summary
1883 passenger manifest for the steamship Republic (per the inbox filename). Source image is densely written and small; needs full Claude-vision transcription pass to extract entries. Filename context: the user filed this document believing it contains the **Patrick Murphy second-trip** entry (Patrick's GEDCOM has two NY arrivals: March 1882 AND March 1883). The 1884 Declaration of Intent (separate document) recorded Patrick's first arrival as March 1882; this 1883 ship may document the second arrival — possibly after a return trip to Ireland to fetch family belongings or for unfinished business. VISION PASS DONE (2026-05-30, transcribe_jpg.py → transcription_claude.md), then a 2026-05-30 native-resolution crop-and-zoom on the one candidate. The source is high-res (4400x5704); the full-page harness render downsamples it into illegibility, but cropped bands read cleanly. ONE candidate: **line 316, "Pat. Murphy, 22, M, Farmer"**, travelling alone (line 315 James Ryder / line 317 John White — not a family group). Zoom-confirmed: name reads "Pat. Murphy"; age reads "22" (decisively not 32 — cf. the clear "36" on line 317). VERDICT — genuinely INCONCLUSIVE, neither confirms nor excludes Patrick: - name + solo travel fit a lone second crossing; - age 22 is younger than Patrick's real age (~33 if b. 1850) AND his paper age (~25 if b. 1858) — which would argue AGAINST him, EXCEPT the working hypothesis is precisely that he under-reported his age, so a too-young "22" is consistent with that pattern rather than disqualifying; - occupation "Farmer" vs his shoemaker/bartender trade — Beara smallholders were routinely both, so not disqualifying, not confirming; - decisive limit: "Patrick Murphy, ~22, farmer, from Ireland, alone" is the most generic Irish-emigrant entry imaginable. Too generic to be an identification on its own. This page (folio 7) carries no other Murphy and no townland/destination detail to distinguish candidates. The scan is legible — a "better scan" of THIS page won't help; what's needed is the REST of the voyage's pages + Patrick's final naturalization petition (resident-since date). See [[1884-11-04_stutsman-county-dakota_patrick-murphy-declaration-of-intent]] notes.md for the working hypothesis this manifest would confirm/refute (Patrick backdated his 1883 arrival to 1882 on the naturalization papers).

Open questions
- GET THE FULL VOYAGE, NOT A BETTER SCAN OF THIS PAGE. Line 316 reads cleanly ("Pat. Murphy, 22, Farmer, alone") but is too generic to identify. Obtain the OTHER pages of this S.S. Republic 1883 sailing (NY Passenger Lists, Castle Garden era; roll/image still TBC) to check for any Murphy entry whose age/trade/party better matches Patrick.
- Cross-check against Patrick's FINAL Petition for Naturalization (not yet in archive) — its "resident since" date is the cleanest test of the 1882-vs-1883 arrival question.
- Whether the GEDCOM's "two arrivals (1882 + 1883)" reflect a genuine round trip or — per the working hypothesis on the declaration record — one real 1883 arrival plus a backdated 1882 paper claim. Line 316 neither confirms nor excludes this.
