BUCKLEY Dear Parents: A letter received from Van Nuys will assure us that there are parents who are thinking, and who are careful to supervise their children. This parent has found that there existed in his neighborhood an unfenced swimming pool; also, that there was no ordinance in the city requiring pools to be fenced! As long as there can be no legislation enforced regarding this hazard, all parents should be aware that there is always danger where pools are unprotected. It certainly would be expedient for parents situated near pools which are not enclosed to write to the City Council of the City of Los Angeles and demand such legislation. When there is public need, the City Council will co-operate. Now that summer is coming, please check your neighborhood for the swimming pools without proper protection. One suggestion for a precautionary measure would be a six-foot, chain-link wire fence with barbed wire running along the top and a gate that can be padlocked. It may only be necessary to have a friendly meeting with the owners of unprotected pools, but it seems to me with the number of swimming pools now in existence, especially in the Valley, it would be advisable for parents to ask for a legislation to enforce fenced-in-pools. Perhaps 10,000 Americans will die this year by drowning! Plan for your child to learn to swim this summer. All experts agree that the sooner swimming instruction starts, the better. Everyone should learn how to swim —especially in California! We know it is not only the best kind of relaxation, but it also means lives saved. Swimming is easy to learn, for it comes naturally once a child's confidence is gained. It is a real thrill for a child to be on his own in the water, and gives the best kind of development for a good co-ordinated body. Mrs. Buckley, director of the Buckley Schools and author of "Guide to a Child's World," will answer written inquiries directed to her at P.O. Box 507, Van Nuys.
