Summary

Sports page of the Anaconda Standard, Tue 22 Feb 1921, p. 8 (the clip is a page region). Lead story, under the banner "BEADLE KELLY'S INJURY BARS HIM FROM MEETING MISHKIND": "Beadle Kelly, Butte's favorite lightweight" will not meet Abe Mishkind, "the Salt Lake boy", in the 10-round go at the American Legion boxing exhibition that night in Butte. Dr. Maginn, official physician for the Silver Bow boxing commission, disqualified him because of a broken nose, received while training "last Thursday". He discovered the extent of the injury when he put on the gloves with Bud Logan for a three-round go at the Meaderville gymnasium on Saturday, and a doctor told him an operation would be necessary. Matchmaker Staples of the Legion committee could not get "Puggy" Morton for a 10-round go and signed Vic Gracio of Pocatello ("the Italian"; printed "Cracio" twice; manager Eddie Secor) for the semi-final. The main event is Heinie Schuman v. Bud Logan. The article prints no first name for Kelly. The archive links him to Walter Kelly (1895-1962), brother of Agnes Kelly Murphy, at identity 85: the family tree attaches this report to Walter and cites his 1962 obituary on his Butte boxing years (see people:). The rest of the clipped region (district basketball tournament draw, School of Mines v. Mt. St. Charles, Missoula bowlers, "Line O' Sport", Anaconda Boy Scouts, a Knights of Columbus jackrabbit hunt) names no family member; it is transcribed in transcription_claude.md. Read from the clip image and proofed, 4 Oct 2026; transcription.md holds the lead story.

Narrative

Beadle Kelly, Butte's favorite lightweight, is disqualified from his scheduled 10-round bout with Abe Mishkind at the American Legion boxing exhibition after Dr. Maginn, physician for the Silver Bow boxing commission, finds he is fighting with a broken nose taken in training the previous Thursday and confirmed when Bud Logan landed on it during a sparring session at the Meaderville gymnasium. Matchmaker Staples failed to secure "Puggy" Morton for the vacancy and instead signed Vic Gracio of Pocatello, managed by Eddie Secor, for the semi-final. Heinie Schuman and Bud Logan, both easing off training, are in shape for the main event, and the Mooney-Uren bout is also expected to draw interest.

  • “Doggedly determined to go on, he waited until yesterday before appearing before the doctor appointed by the commission.”
  • “Cracio has earned the title of the "Fighting Wop" and according to those who have seen him in action at Pocatello, he is everything that his name implies.”
  • “Both men have been training with six-ounce gloves instead of the 10 and 12-ounce gloves generally used in training. Both are willing and each is betting on himself.”

Gracio Instea[d?][cut]* "FIGHTING WOP" EXPECTED TO PUT UP GOOD BATTLE Legion Boxing Committee Makes Endeavor to Secure Puggy Morton. Schuman and Logan in Shape to Go the Distance. Both Ready for Tonight. Beadle Kelly, Butte's favorite lightweight, will not meet Abe Mishkind in the 10-round go scheduled for the American Legion boxing exhibition tonight. This fact was learned yesterday when Dr. Maginn, official physician for the Silver Bow boxing commission,[.?] disqualified Kelly because of a broken nose. Although Beadle was willing to enter the ring with the Salt Lake boy, the boxing commission flatly refused to countenance the proposition, their action being heartily indorsed by the Legion boxing committee. Kelly received the broken nose while training last Thursday. At the time he did not pay particular attention to it and it was not until he put on the gloves with Bud Logan for a three-round go at the Meaderville gymnasium on Saturday, that he discovered the extent of the injury. A well-directed punch by Logan settled beyond doubt that the Butte boy was in a bad way. In an effort to conceal his injury, Kelly went to a doctor to have the nasal passage [c?]leared, but was informed that an op[er?]ation would be necessary which would eliminate him from the fight. Doggedly determined to go on, he waited until yesterday before appearing before the doctor appointed by the commission. Morton Is Sought. Immediately after learning of Kelly's condition, Matchmaker Staples of the Legion committee got into communication with "Puggy" Morton, only to learn that it would be impossible to secure him for a 10-round go. Learning that Vic Gracio was in town from Pocatello, the matchmaker got in touch with Manager Eddie Secor, and succeeded in signing the Italian for the semi-final. Although Gracio agreed to terms on short notice, he is in the best of condition for the fight. He was signed to fight Mishkind at Pocatello last Tuesday, but the bout was called off because of the Legion fight in Butte. He trained up to three days ago and worked out at 7 o'clock last night at the Crowley & Lockhart gymnasium. Cracio has been fighting fo[r t?]he last two years and has been u[n?]der the management of Secor for six months. In his recent fights he is credited with a win over Frank Darren of Idaho Falls in a 12-round encounter. His last fight was with "Muff" Bronson at Pocatello. Although he lost the decision to Bronson because of a broken hand, which he got in the third round, he put up a wonderful battle during the remaining five rounds of the encounter. Bronson and Mishkind recently fought 15 rounds to a draw. Willing to Battle. Cracio has earned the title of the "Fighting Wop" and according to those who have seen him in action at Pocatello, he is everything that his name implies. He is a fighter of Mishkind's style, pursuing slambang tactics. Heinie Schuman, who meets Bud Logan in the main event began to ease up on his training yesterday, as did Logan. Both men are in first-class shape, and those who watched them work out are of the opinion that the fight will be one of the best staged in Butte in years. Logan made quite an impression by his aggressiveness, the concensus of opinion being that he depends more on his driving power and slugging ability than on scientific boxing. Schuman, on the other hand, has won thousands of adherents by his ring generalship and his knowledge of the fine poinst of the game. The Mooney-Uren fight will be worth seeing. Both men have been training with six-ounce gloves instead of the 10 and 12-ounce gloves generally used in training. Both are willing and each is betting on himself.

Open questions

  • Resolved 2026-10-04 — the clip is the sports page, lead story Beadle Kelly's broken nose. Still open — Beadle Kelly = Walter Kelly rests on the family tree, which cites his Montana Standard obituary of 2 Nov 1962 (not filed); filing it would settle the identity.
