Summary
The two Murphy pages of the 1896 Polk directory (about 150 Murphy entries). Two entries fix the household of Patrick J. Murphy the bartender at 313 South Washington street: - p. 311: **Murphy Patrick J, bartndr, res 313 S Washington.** The only bartender among the eleven Patrick Murphys on the page. - p. 310: **Murphy Maggie, bds 313 S Washington.** Patrick's unmarried sister Margaret, who crossed with Ellen and James in 1892, boarding in the same house. Together with the Anaconda Standard of 24 June 1896 ("the 3-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Murphy ... from the residence at No. 313 South Washington street"), this closes the identification: the bartender Patrick J. Murphy of 313 S Washington in 1896 is the father (Jamestown bartender 1885; Warm Springs 1908; d. 1912), and the household in 1896 was Patrick, Ellen, James (12-13, not listed), Daniel (b. 1894), the infant daughter who died in June 1896, and Maggie. Note: the user's note says "312"; both the directory and the newspaper read 313. Other entries that matter for disambiguation: - **Murphy Patrick S, miner, res n s B A & P Ry 6 e of Wyoming**: the RELA dues book's No. 92 "Patrick S. Murphy" (1898-1901) is this miner, not the father. - Murphy Patrick J, miner, res rear 834 N Wyoming; Murphy Patrick J, miner, res 205 Dublin: the two other "Patrick J" in 1896. - Murphy Hannah (wid Patrick), res 505 E Summit, Dublin Gulch: the widow of Patrick C. Murphy, killed in the St. Lawrence fire of 23 Nov 1889 (Dublin Gulch). - Murphy Patrick C, pumpman Matt Mine, bds Dublin Gulch: another Patrick C. - Murphy John R, bartndr 7 N Main, rms 209 Dakota: the other bartender (AOH Division 1 Fin. Sec. 1900; RELA No. 26/39). - Murphy Jeremiah D, miner, res 133 Pacific, Centerville: Jerry D. Murphy (Division 1 vice-president 1903-06; vouched for by RELA No. 23 in 1907). - Murphy Jeremiah J, saloon 820 N Main, res same. - Murphy Thomas, shoemkr 110 E Copper, res same (Patrick had been a shoemaker in Ireland; kinship unknown). - Murphy Patrick, died Oct 24, '95, age 23; Murphy Paul, died Feb 10, '95, age 47; Murphy Stephen J, died May 25, '95, age 45; Murphy Walter, died Jan 15, '95, age 69. Gap: p. 309 (Murphy A-E: Andrew, Daniel, Dennis ...) was not photographed; it would show the "Dan Murphy" candidates of the 1892 Division 1 subscription list.
