Baseline page from the 1884 directory, when the father was still in Dakota Territory (declaration of intent at Jamestown, 4 Nov 1884). The Patricks: - Murphy Patrick, carman Alice G & S M Co, bds Timothy Sidley. - Murphy Patrick, fireman Alice G & S M Co, bds Dennis Lynch. Both work for the Alice Gold & Silver Mining Co (Walkerville) and board in private houses (Timothy Sidley; Dennis Lynch, who is on the 1889 AOH ball reception committee with a "Patrick J. Murphy"). No "Patrick J". Also on the page: Murphy Thomas A, clerk at the Utah & Northern Ry freight and ticket office; Murphy Michael, waiter for Eugene Sullivan. Useful as the pre-arrival control: the name pool of Patrick Murphys in Butte before 1885. Gap: p. 193 (Murphy A-Michael) was not photographed.
