James J. Murphy (Butte, d. 1927 age 58)

family confidence: 0 — not family / context

The "OTHER" James J. Murphy of the user's filing (per the original PDF filename Obituary_for_OTHER_JAMES_J_MURPHY) — distinct from the user's James Joseph Murphy (b. 1883 Ardgroom Cork, d. 1938 LA, the 1908 Murphy-Kelly wedding groom and the Centerville AOH leader). Died at home 79 Missoula avenue Butte on 4 April 1927 age 58 (b. ~1869 Ireland). Resident of Butte 35 years (came c. 1892). Widow: Mrs. Agnes Murphy — a DIFFERENT Agnes Murphy from the user's JJM's wife Agnes Kelly (m. 1908, daughter of John Kelly of Walkerville). The two-Agneses coincidence was a real risk for collapse; GEDCOM evidence 2026-05-27 confirms they're distinct. Six sons: Vincent, Francis, Emmet, James, Paul, William. Sister: Mrs. Mary Quinn. Brother John in Ireland. Sister-in-law Mrs. Nan Rayn, brother-in-law Pat V. Ryan of Butte. Memberships: Catholic Foresters, Woodmen of the World, Butte Aerie No. 11 F.O.E. — NOT AOH. Almost certainly unrelated to the user's Murphy line despite the surname + Butte + Ireland-born coincidence. **NEW 2026-05-28 (Opus vision pass)**: The 1927-04-05 Anaconda Standard obit also names a **grandson, Thomas Murphy** — confirming OTHER JJM had at least one grandchild by his 1927 death (i.e. one of his six sons had already had a child by then). Worth filing as a separate person record on a follow-up pass if more documentation surfaces. **Per the user (4 Oct 2026):** a miner, and he died of tuberculosis. Family knowledge; no filed source yet. The 1927 Anaconda Standard obit gives neither occupation nor cause, and the archive has no fuller obit or death certificate for him. Lead, not tested: RELA member No. 204, "James Murphy", was a patient at the Galen tuberculosis sanitarium Mar-Sep 1923 (research/docs/jjm-dossier-2026-09-26/register/books-rela.yaml); the dossier excluded him as the user's JJM but did not say who he was.

role: banquet_attendee · identity 15 family confidence on this source: 10 · as printed: James Murphy

Identity: The bare 'James Murphy' at the AOH banquet for national president Regan also sang that night. James was Butte's singing Murphy (eight documented performances, 1910-18, per the RELA No. 61 reassessment), which points the bare name to James. If the older man was there at all he is more likely the 'James J. Murphy' entry (about 25). His obituary lists no AOH membership, and Butte had at least four James J. Murphys in Irish circles.

Identity: The Irish Relief Committee of Butte (Lynch, Sewell, Gribben, McCarthy, Crowley) is James's AOH circle. CLAUDE.md rule 3 gives a bare 'James J. Murphy' in pre-1928 Butte AOH and civic coverage to James. Not zero, because the older man was probably an RELA member and RELA men sat on Irish relief bodies.
