Page overview

Page five of the Montana Standard for 4 April 1944, dominated by a large Safeway Easter grocery advertisement occupying the central and right-hand two-thirds of the page. The left-hand columns carry local obituaries, military-training notices, and brief civic items in dense small type under individual name headings. A Miners Dairy display ad anchors the lower-left corner. The overall editorial tone is workaday wartime local news, with rationed-goods pricing and point values prominent throughout the Safeway spread.

Juxtapositions

  • The Lewis Wilson obituary and other death notices in col 1 run immediately adjacent to the large cheerful Safeway Easter Guide banner, with its cartoon Easter bunnies and coloured-egg imagery, creating a sharp tonal contrast between grief and festive grocery promotion.
  • Rationed-items pricing with ration-point values (Peas, Corn, Green Beans) appears in the Safeway spread directly beside the Board No. 1 Draft Group notice, both items reflecting the wartime economy on the same page.
