Page overview

An interior page (p.5) of The Butte Inter Mountain, dated Tuesday, February 27, 1912, combining local news columns on the left with a dominant full-column advertisement for the Remington Typewriter Company occupying the entire right half of the page. The left side carries a mix of local news items, wire briefs, and display advertisements for patent medicines, eyeglasses, and Carter's Little Liver Pills. Editorial content ranges from a club installation story to brief crime and death dispatches, with no single story dominating the news columns. The page's overall visual weight is captured entirely by the Remington advertisement, which uses bold display typography and large numerals to present sales statistics.

Juxtapositions

  • The brief 'ALASKAN MURDERED AND BODY ROBBED IN SEATTLE YARDS' wire dispatch is tucked below a genteel eyeglasses advertisement for Hight & Fairfield Co., jewelers and opticians.

TUESDAY, FEB. 27, 1912. THE BUTTE INTER MOUNTAIN. 5 ## Column 1 # DELICATELY FORMED and gently reared, women will find in all the seasons of their lives, as maidens, wives and mothers, that the one simple, wholesome laxative remedy which acts gently and pleasantly and naturally and which may be taken at any time, when the system needs a laxative, with perfect safety and really beneficial effects, is Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna. It has that true delicacy of flavor which is so refreshing to the taste, that warming and grateful toning to the stomach which responds so favorably to its action and the laxative effect which is so beneficial to the system when, occasionally, its gentle cleansing is desired. The genuine, always bearing the name of the California Fig Syrup Co., may be purchased from all leading druggists in original packages of one size only; price fifty cents per bottle. Olson, who recently arrived here from Iditarod, Alaska, was found lying across the Northern Pacific railroad tracks a short distance south of Spokane avenue last night. A revolver and one empty whisky bottle found near the body led the police to believe at first that Olson had committed suicide, but investigation showed that he had been shot twice, once in the back of the head and once through the heart. The coroner said today he is satisfied Olson was murdered, and believes robbery was the motive. A letter signed Lena, found in Olson's pocket, apparently was from a sister, residing at 207 North Albany street, Chicago. ### SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE. Mrs. Exe—It isn't right to charge Willie with taking that money out of your pocket. Why don't you accuse me? Mr. Exe—Because it wasn't all taken. [advertisement] # ABSOLUTE SECURITY. The entertainment provided by the Centerville Young Men's club last evening for their fourth annual public installation of officers proved conclusively that in the four years of its existence the popular hill club has made great progress. Each of the speakers commented on this, and County Attorney Tom Walker went one further and said that such a gymnasium in each of the four sections of the city would be of incalculable benefit to the community. All the speakers confined themselves to paying a tribute to the boys of the club and to giving a little advice, which was always accepted in the spirit offered. A. B. Melzner characterized the members of the club as the "best bunch of boys" in the city, and as far as athletics went they could outgame anything of their weight or age "that ever met on a football field, a baseball diamond or a basketball court." Judge Lynch told the boys they had many friends on the outside who watched their careers with the greatest of interest. Judge McClernan gave two bits of advice: "Obey all laws, human and divine," and "Mind your own business." ### "Mother" of the Club. Tribute was paid to John Gillie of the Amalgamated company, Jim Brennan of the Mountain Con mine and Miss Anna Sullivan, who is known as the "mother of the club," for in her head and heart originated the idea of a club for the lads. Miss Sullivan made a brief talk at the end of the program, telling the boys how proud she was of their success. Jerry D. Murphy, the new president of the club, presided at the meeting and briefly introduced the past president, Otis Lee, who welcomed the immense gathering, told of the efforts of the club and asked for the co-operation of all for its success. The program was enjoyed to the utmost. The exhibitions on the bars and the mat by the club members were astonishing, and a vein of humor was injected which won instant approval. The boxing exhibitions were a treat. The musical end of the program was well attended to. The ushers of the club were busy endeavoring to seat all that desired admission. About 500 had to be turned away. It is expected that the fifth annual show will be given at the Broadway theater, for there only could the crowd that sought admittance last evening be accommodated. The program follows: ### The Program. Introduction—Jerry D. Murphy. Remarks—Otis Lee, past president. Musical selections—Smith's orchestra. Club swinging—The Kelly brothers and Tim Harrington. Remarks—Judge McClernan. Vocal solo—Mrs. Martha Collins. Recitation—Miss Imelda Kelly. Bar exhibition by the club members. Whistling solo—Mrs. Charles McDonald. Four-round boxing bout—Tally and Teddy Johns. Remarks—Judge Lynch. Monologue—Joe Duffy. Three rounds sparring—John L. Sullivan and Howard Opie. Remarks—A. B. Melzner. Piano selections by the Centerville Paderewski, Rene Rouleau. Four rounds boxing—Willie Leary and Young Riley. Remarks—Judge Donlan. Four rounds sparring, heavyweights—Tom Neenan and Alf Henderson. Remarks—Tom Walker. Vocal solo—Emmet Sullivan. Mat exhibition—Club members. Four rounds boxing—Tommy Masterson and George Siddons. Remarks—Miss Anna Sullivan. ### GOOD TEMPLARS OF BUTTE HOLD A BANQUET ON THEIR ANNIVERSARY The old days in Montana were referred to in an address by Massena Bullard at the banquet last evening by the Good Templars of Butte to mark their thirty-sixth anniversary. He contrasted conditions then and now. He said the first templar society was formed in a saloon building. Rev. C. A. Rexroad was toastmaster. The program follows: Address, Massena Bullard; "The Saloon," Rev. Walter M. Jordan; "Templars at Work," Col. J. B. Knight; "The Future of the Temperance Cause," Rev. Dr. Furbay; "Temperance and Butte," Mayor Duncan; "Montana Templars", William J. Gray; "Temperance as a National Issue," the Rev. G. D. Wolfe; "The Press," Charles Cohen; "Temperance Laws in Montana," Attorney Alexander Mackel; "The Church and Temperance," the Rev. E. J. Groeneveld; "The Woman's Christian Temperance Union and Temperance," Mrs. A. B. Clinch, and "The Catholic Church and Temperance," Attorney J. J. McCaffery. ### ORDER IS ISSUED. An order was issued yesterday on behalf of the Mill and Smeltermen's union, directed to the officers of the Miners' union, the Engineers' union and J. C. Lowney, a director of the Western Federation of Miners, requiring them to produce in court next Saturday the constitution and by-laws of the organizations named. ### MRS. LEWIS IS DEAD. Spokane, Feb. 27.—Mrs. Pearl Lewis, wife of Fred Lewis, died in a hospital here last night from the effects of a quantity of bichloride of mercury tablets, taken, it is believed, with suicidal intent. The couple came here from Butte, Mont. ## Columns 3-5 [one boxed advertisement] [boxed advertisement] # SOME Remington Typewriter FIGURES 583 The number of Remington Typewriter Salesrooms throughout the world. 1,011 The number of different keyboards furnished on the Remington Typewriter. 117 The number of different styles of type with which Remington Typewriters are equipped. 84 The number of languages written on the Remington Typewriter. 347 The number of different Totalizers furnished on the Remington Adding and Subtracting Typewriter (Wahl Adding Mechanism). 29% The increase in Remington Typewriter Sales during the past year over any previous year since the beginning. *More than* 750,000 The number of Remington Typewriters in use today—more than any other make and more than many others combined.
